I love it sprinkled on popcorn and used to make "cheese" sauces.

nutritional yeast is an inactive yeast that has been grown on molasses. It has a mild cheese-like or nutty flavor. it is good sprinkled on popcorn, pasta or pizza. Many people use it to make vegan cheeze. i really like it and it is a source of vitamin B-12

for the record, only ONE brand of nutritional yeast has been shown to contain the type of B12 that is absorbable by our bodies. it's made by "red star".

you can read more about b12 and how vegans can get it into their diets at this page on vegan outreach

they have an excellent, comprehensive article up about it that debunks a lot of the B12 myths perpetuated by vegetarian groups.

I went to my HFS and asked and they had no idea what it was... is it possibly known by another name? They had brewer's yeast, which I know is not it, but also Torula yeast..

shewolf. I have had the same problem before, and though it must have gone under another name.

I found one HFS that sold "nutritional yeast" I didn't buy it because I didn't have any money on me! But, they sold it in a box... so yea, it does exsist here..

Try asking for savoury yeast.

I am kicking myself for not getting it before, because this HFS is out of town, although I might be near there next weekend. Just ring up all the HFS in your area, I'm sure you'll find some!

I am stunned that your HFS doesn't carry nutritional yeast! it's been around forever, and is a big staple with health nuts! We have it in the bulk section of our store and we sell LOTS of it!

I like it sprinkled on brown rice with Bragg's Liquid Aminos. yum yum!!!

I also add it to my Ramen noodles to give the broth more body and yumminess.

it takes a bit of getting used to, but now I love love love the stuff!!!

Ok. Shewolf and other Aussies:

When you go to the HFS ask for Savoury Yeast Flakes. Then they will know what you are talking about. I went to my fave HFS today and asked why they don't know what nutritional yeast is, and after much talk, we decided it was because you need to link the word yeast with savoury and flakes. They don't have any on the counter there, but she said she has ordered them already 2 times this month.

Yay! Now I don't need to go to this other hfs.

They cost almost 10 bucks for 100 grams.

Nutritional Yest is a big staple food for me, but I find it is yucky unless garlic and salt is added to the mix!! Try fried cheezy tofu:

Cut firm tofu in strips

Dip in Nutritional Yeast Mix (Nut. YEadt, garlic, salt) to coat

Fry until brown and crisp

MMMMMM! So good!!

Also, try a cheezy sauce with nutritional yeast, garlic, salt to taste, mixed with plain soy milk (I use Silk brand) to desired consistency. I just do this after I have already cooked the pasta and drained it, kinda like pouring in the powder mix you get with Mac & Cheese.
