Hi, I was wondering if you guys could recomend me a good book on Vegan nutrition, not so much on recepies but on what veganisim does to your body, the health benefits etc. I'm getting tired of people telling me that I'm following a poor diet with not enough protein and with tons of carbs... people really are afraid of carbs they always seem to get very worried when they know I'm vegan, they think you can get diabetes by eating whole grains etc. Anyways, I need all the information I can get on the nutrition so I stop worring about what people are telling meabout my health.

xoxo

The China Study shows how unhealthy the omnivorous diet is and how the vegan diet is better, written by a pre-eminent nutritional scientist. Also, if you go to the PCRM website (http://www.PCRM.org --PCRM members also get a magazine). Also, the McDougall website (http://www.drmcdougall.com/medical_nutrition.html) and books have a lot of good information. Also Joanne Stepaniak has at least a couple of books (some not cookbooks but the discussion of the vegan lifestyle including nutrition). John Robbins also has books/website (http://www.foodrevolution.org/) with some nutritional info. Also a little information at the Vegan society in book form as Plant Based Nutrition and via website (http://www.vegansociety.com/html/food/nutrition/). Another book--which I haven't read--A Basic Course in Vegetarian and Vegan Nutrition.

Definately "The China Study" and "Diet for a New America" changed me forever. Also I am planning on buying "Skinny *****" which is about how a vegan diet is so halthy and it the only way to really stay healthy and thin.

Another vote for "Becoming Vegan" - really really good. I'm not vegan but I loved the information in this book. It made me very confident about taking meat out of my life.

I also vote for Eat To Live, by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, MD. If you want a real quick course on nutrition, get his video entitled 'Greatest Diet on Earth'. Its about an hour and a half. I asked my husband if he'd watch it with me and give his medical opinion (he is a physician), and he was totally impressed, and it made him want to read the Eat to Live book. The book is very heavily referenced, and the references are very high quality ones, to well respected peer-reviewed medical journals, in case you want to read some of the medical literature that backs up what he is saying. It is very unusual for a book of this genre (a diet book) to be so well documented with such high quality references. There are probably about 1000 references (can't remember exactly). My husband read a lot of the referenced material as he was plodding through the book, so it took him a really long time to read it!
