so i've been reading the non-drinking thread and i wonder why people don't drink. just pick your main reason out of the choices, if it's a combination pick what you feel more strongly about.

i dont drink because its an addictive (and a harmful one at that), and you become a lot more vulnerable to crime, and generally harming yourself, after drinking. i also dont like the taste of it.

is there meant to be a poll here?

ETA: i basically don't drink, cos if i drink, i get drunk, and if i get drunk, my life just doesn't continue to run anywhere near as smoothly as i like it to. lol. thats why i gave it up, anyway.

logically, for me, its too expensive, tastes foul (apart from those alcopop thingies) i don't want to pay out to loose my grip on reality, get felt up by sleezy men in bars, act like a complete muppet, loose/annoy my friends, pass out in a hedge, feel ill the next day, and wreck my liver by the time i'm 40.

also watching someone close to me come apart at the seams through alcoholism, and then seeing lots of the alcoholics that this person went through rehab with relapse and degenerate mentally and physically (and sometimes die as a result of their drinking- even after they got sober) over the past few years has reallly put me off it too.

i know other people can have better experiences than these (or just enjoy these experiences more than me) and/or can show more restraint and drink small amounts, occasionally or socially, but thats my experience of alcohol, and it colours my choice to not drink.

i can't drink beers anyway, because i have a yeast allergy (its very impressive- i swell up and am in agony, lol), and other types of alcohol make me pretty ill generally too, cos my body just doesn't like it- but that didn't stop me drinking a whole bunch (vodka, tia maria, malibu, and tequila) for a few years in my late teens. what an educational period in my life those years were, lol- but not one to be repeated- i learned what i needed to learn the first time!

I (mostly) don't drink because it gives me a horrible stuffy nose and often, a migraine. Also, my SO doesn't drink, and drinking alone is just lame. The occasional margarita with Tex-Mex or bellini with brunch is worth it, though.

1. habit

2. drinking marginalizes non-drinkers and is often done out of conformity - which is kinda sad - so I've developed an aversion to it.

oh, and I fear that if I started drinking, I would turn into one of those people who think their drinking stories are the funniest things in the whole world and will tell those stories to everyone. If I ever become like that, someone should push me off a cliff.

I have nothing against drinking and used to enjoy some alcoholic beverages (good beer and gin and tonics especially), but drinking never did agree with me too much. To put it politely, alcoholic beverages tend to "go right through me." I used to not mind a little abdominal discomfort, but as I got older it started to bother me more (I was diagnosed with IBS). A few years ago I started changing my lifestyle--eating vegan, exercising regularly--and alcohol, since it is pretty much empty calories, didn't seem to fit in with that. It didn't make me feel good.

Plus I started to realize that one of the reasons I used to like to drink (it relaxed me socially), just didn't apply anymore since I'm naturally a lot more relaxed in social situations than I used to be. Plus once I was out of grad school the majority of my socializing didn't take place in bars anymore. I'm just not around alcohol very often anymore. My SO hardly ever drinks.

So, to sum it up, I like some forms of alcohol, but I don't like it enough to outweigh the negatives. It's kind of how I feel about chicken. I used to eat it all the time, but once I stopped, I never missed it.

Addictive, harmful, pointless...??

Addictive - Someone prone to addictive behavior is going to get addictive to something whether they drink or not. I drink wine on occassion, but I am in now way addicted. I don't have to drink it, just like I don't have to eat my favorite foods.

Harmful - Too much of anything is harmful. Some alcohal in moderation is shown to have a great many benefits. Especially red wines.

Pointless - Do you do anything because you enjoy it? Just because you don't like to drink does not mean it is pointless for everyone. If you love to eat figs, candy, popcorn, etc, I could easily say that is pointless. You don't need to eat those things, but you do because you enjoy it.

A lot of judgemental people in here who do not possess the facts.

I agree, Ducati. I don't think that having an alcoholic beverage you enjoy is pointless any more than preparing food to make it taste good is pointless.

I don't have the facts? You mean alcohol is not harmful or addictive? And how would you know if drinking alcohol is pointless TO ME or not?

I don't have a purpose or reason to drink alcohol, therefore it is pointless for me. I was answering the question for myself, as the OP asked. Again, alcohol is harmful. Alcohol is an addictive substance.

I answered why I don't drink alcohol. Oh, and I DO have the facts.

Sounds like someone is getting a little defensive.

Oh, and to the judgemental comment:

I wasn't judging anyone. I was answering the question for myself. I have opinions about drinking alcohol.

If you want to act like my comments towards alcohol are really judgemental comments meant to put down others, too bad. That's your problem.

i'm all for the 'each to their own' school of thought. i accept that my feelings on alcohol use are biased by my experiences (everyones feelings about everything is!), and i like to think that the vast majority of others can make their own rational choices on whats ok for them to do and feel about alcohol, food, or pretty much whatever. i don't give anyone who drinks an earful, or think they're 'wrong' - it just aint right for me, and i sincerely hope that my post didn't come across as judgemental.

Uh, nobody said drinking was pointless to EVERYONE. So they think it's pointless to them, no need to get defensive.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel as well.

I can only say what I think about alcohol and why it's not right for me. I can say that I think it's gross and pointless, because that's what it is to me. Some people just don't get that.
