I recently inherited a laptop from my father, which is running XP Media Center edition.

I have discovered that it seems to be missing both the calculator and paint programs!

Does anyone know of a way that I can get those programs and put them on?

Or, for that matter, of comparable (or better) programs that would do the same functions?

I have a calculator widget that I use, so that's not so important but it'd still be nice to have.

Did you check in the Windows directory? It should be located here: C:\\Windows\\system32\\calc.exe

If not you can download them here. Just put them in the above directory and they should work.

gimp is about 100X more powerful than MSPaint, and may not be what you're looking for. Although I don't know why anyone would want to use Paint, when there are so many other options out there... I'm sure theres a free or Open Source Paint clone out there, but again I ask... why? Get a serious graphics program like gimp or Paint Shop Pro...

I use PaintShopPro for all of my Graphics work. I tried to like Gimp, but I couldn't wrap my brain around the interface. PSP makes more sense to me (but then again, I've been using it for years...)

I've been using Photoshop for years and tried gimp (at the behest of an online friend) but didn't care for having to relearn what controlled what. I unloaded it within the hour I loaded it.

It's probably fine for those that have not been using other programs or that don't mind learning yet another program that does the same thing. Work with what you know and what you need; no need to change just because it's open source or whatever.

Because it's free software is a perfectly good reason to change, anyway, like I said, try out gimpshop, it's gimp with a more photoshop interface.

Check in your control panel...click on Add and remove programs, and then on the left panel, click on add and remove Windows componants.

Then click once on Accesories and Untilities(I think, I'm on a french PC right now), and click details. Then click accessories and then details again. make sure the calculator and Paint are checked.

Then click next, and finish.

Odd, I'd swear I replied here last night.

Anyway, ~Wonder was correct, they were in my Windows directory. Apparently my father had deleted the start menu shortcuts to them or something.

I've restored them, so good as new.

Also got a few trial versions of photo software I'm playing with.

Obviously, I know that. The problem is that they weren't in there. Like I said in the last post, they were apparently removed before I inherited the laptop.
