Anyone see this story about a baby that died and it was 'vegan' because it's parents were 'vegan'? It's been floating around for a few weeks.
It makes me sick how they make no attempt to understand OR explain the facts. They just blame it on veganism. Despicable.

I did too. It's still awaiting moderation. They probably won't publish what I said: "A vegan diet for an infant is not deadly. What these parents did has nothing to do with an animal-free diet. Nobody needs animal foods to survive and be healthy, but they do need nutrition, which is what the parents neglected to give to the child. Please don’t continue the myth that humans have to eat animal foods to live. Grade F- for failure to do any homework."

This is like every 'vegan baby dies' I've ever heard. Which is 3 (but each is told in many different places. It just looks like more than 3 - I've searched the past 30 or 40 years, and it is only 3). So 4 now I guess.

Anyway, an extraordinarily restricted and inappropriate diet is to blame, not a vegan diet. The kid probably wouldn't have done any better if he was fed nothing but liquified fried chicken.

It's sad, but most of the alternative milks I've ever bought have had printed on them: Not to be Used as Infant Formula. I just double-checked with the soymilk in my refrigerator, and yep, it does indeed say that.

I just posted on my facebook and twitter "http://www.longislandpress.com/2011/09/14/%E2%80%98vegan%E2%80%99-couple-gets-life-for-starving-6-week-old-son/ This is not veganism. thats ignorance and cruelty, not veganism.http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/realveganchildren these are vegan."

In times like this you educate those around you and shake your head in disbelief.

The good old, largely unbiased BBC reported this OK: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/6642543.stm

The prosecutors made a point about saying this wasn't about veganism, but about willful neglect.

Quote:

"But prosecutors in the US city of Atlanta said the couple had deliberately neglected their child.

"No matter how many times they want to say, 'We're vegans, we're vegetarians,' that's not the issue in this case," Prosecutor Chuck Boring is quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying.

"The child died because he was not fed. Period," he said."

This is an important point that the US's more sensationalist media outlets did not seem to print.

EDIT: to add that the kid was 6 weeks old. He should be eating nothing but breastmilk.

The main thing that bothers me about this whole story is that the parents might not even be vegan in the first place and the media uses "vegan" just to sensationalize the story. Are they requesting vegan meals in prison? were they also malnourished b/c they weren't eating enough food?

i get this sneaking feeling they aren't even vegan...

Such a sad story. My smallest is only 9 weeks old and I admit to getting a bit choked up when I read about things like this. I'm sure they didn't want or expect their baby to die

another quote from the story on the BBC :

Quote:

the couple did not take their child to a doctor because they feared hospitals were full of germs.

This pitiful, idiotic couple almost certainly had that fear instilled in them by the same sensationalist media that is now running the "vegan diet kills babies!" headlines. A very sad state of affairs.

Giving a bad name for people who actually know what their doing vegan or not a baby should only be having breastmilk or baby formula and you can buy soya and other baby formula as my daughter had one as she couldn't have the cows milk ones. Breastfeeding would surely of been ideal as you can insure it's free of any animal products by not eating them yourself. Selfish, stupid people! poor baby

Having a start like this, you knew the article had to be good, didn't you?

In fairness, I do imagine that the same newspaper identifies meat-eaters as such when discussing crimes they have committed.

But of course. What self-respecting organization wouldn't? After all, it is our dietary choices that determine our actions.
