I have decided to move my family into vegetarianism. I have stayed away from pork and beef for the past 10 years. I have decided to remove poultry and fish as well. I am going back and forward on the diary products because I have a one year old and although all the research indicates that children do not need cows milk I am still a little concerned about removing him right now. So here I am. BTW... I found this Board because I can not get into tofu. I have tried firm, extra firm, soft whatever, and I would rather do without it. ANy suggestions.

hi and welcome!

you'll find several little sprouts that do great without cow's milk here! (imo it's for the baby cows) here's my daughter

she's 18 months now but this was around 14-15 I think.

hey newbie! congrats on going veggie and welcome to the boards.

as for the dairy... there are loads of parents here who are raising their kids without it, feel free to visit the raising vegetarian children forum at http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/f...play.php?f=110 and they'll offer you loads of advice and support.

there are also some pretty cool books around on raising children vegan, which would help with food plans, diet and nutrition stuff, and maybe just in building some confidence, that you can buy in bookstores or online, or that your local library could probably order in for you- you can raise healthy kids without dairy, otherwise kids with dairy allergies would just ... well... they wouldn't be around, lol.

as for the tofu, i'd suggest trying it in a few different ways and meals, see the tip of the day thread: http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/s...ad.php?t=50249 for some ideas on how to use it, and the recipe forum http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/f...play.php?f=142 for some ways of cooking it, and after that, if you decide you still just don't like it, its ok... you don't have to have it, lol.

there are loads of other sources of calcium and protein, and things you can use to create a meaty, chewy, dense, crumbly or creamy texture in foods, with a little experimentation and some new recipes and a look around your grocery store you can find alternatives, and you'll be fine without it!

anyway... hope this helps a little, and welcome!
