My friend just told me that she's been vegetarian for two months! I said, "Wow, why didn't you tell me?" and her response was that she felt like she was experimenting with it and wasn't sure if it would stick. Which I can totally relate to; I didn't tell anyone at first for the same reasons. I didn't want everyone holding their breath for me to fail.

It's funny, I guess I never noticed the change in her diet because I just thought she was putting out special food for me. Last time we cooked out at her house there was meat there; I just didn't notice that she wasn't one of the people eating it.

Anyway, I told her, "Two months! That's a lot, that's a huge accomplishment." And generally praised her to the moon. I think there's an excellent probability that she'll continue with it, because she's a huge animal lover and one of the few people I know who have long said they "wished they could" do it. If so, it'll be nice to finally have a veg*n friend.

I think I'll cook her a big, fat vegan celebration dinner!

That's great and it sounds like you know the importance of being supportive. It's really tough when you feel like you're on your own. The fact that she made it that long is a good sign.

Good for her and good for you.

I have yet to make a veggie friend IRL (the closest I have come is a girlfriend who doesn't eat red meat).

My daughter (the anti-vegan) recently committed to not eating pork - I was floored at her bravery.......

Now I just have to get her to hook up her computer, so she can meet all of you wonderful people! Now that's a support system.

I believe it's her way of taking a baby step for my sake. She's only 15, so I haven't pushed her. I do have Meet Your Meat and A Cow at my Table on order. I want to watch them with her and then discuss. I just don't want to cause any trauma I shouldn't (she might become some psycho - then they'd be talking about the whako veggie mom who brainwashed her kid on 60 minutes....).
