I chose to become a vegetarian after Jane Goodall's book and watching "Meet your Meat". I am sickened by the site of meat. Just knowing that a innocent animal was tortured. I can't discribe how awful I feel. My family are all meat eaters, when I told them I was going to become vegetarian they told me that I should read/watch things that make me feel bad about eating meat and that I should just get over it, because eating meat is what we are ment to do. Does any one have any stories like this? I know that I am just going to have to be stuborn and not cave to "peer" pressure. I would like to know how others handled their unsympathetic families/friends.

I deal with this every day. I guess I'm lucky because the same empathy that made me vegan I use to see that any hostility they show isn't really about me at all. For example when I told my Mom I was vegan she asked all the same questions; "what do you eat then just vegetables" and "how are you getting protein" etc. and I simply assumed she was coming from a place of love and answered her as such and that is how I have responded to everyone, I hope.

I am in cosmetology school (near the end) and ALL the time I get "so are you still on that diet of yours" and "when are you going to start eating normal" like eating the dead is the normality I should be striving for. I just assume they mean the best and come here and bash them
just kidding..........I think.

I've been teased for eating 'rabbit food', and some of my less than supportive friends tend to say things like 'no we have to ask where she'd like to go, because she is picky'. Ah well, there are plenty of people who aren't so close minded. Fortunately, my family were very accepting, and they are the people who matter most to me. Your family are more than likely acting out of concern - if you show them how fabulous and healthy you can be as a veg*n, then who knows, you might even convert some of them!!!

most people seem to have unsupportive relatives and/or friends... it's a way of the world unfortunately!

i don't tend to mention my veganism unless i get asked about it. i just get these sort of ignorant jibes from people.

don't listen to them. most of what they say is unfounded. if you know in your hear what you want to do, a reluctant omni should never get in your way!

also, the best of luck on your journey into vegetarianism! for some it can be short, for others it can last a lifetime. always enjoy your road to healthy and ethical living.

Ugh! Yes! My grandfather...

"Yes dear, but you have to understand that God put meat animals here for a reason..so people could eat them...meat is a natural side of human life.."

etc. It's floating around here somewhere...
