Anyhow its still one of the greatest places Ive been too, over 150 vegetarian menu items and I have yet to be disappointed. Id still go there. Plus its only 10 minutes from where I live.
Sorry to keep going back and forth on this but from what I gather they have now decided to stay vegetarian. Hopefully permanently.

Although it is not strictly a veg place, they had quite a number of vegetarian and vegan dishes the last time I was there (admittedly quite a while ago). Recently returned from a trip out to L.A., visiting my eldest son. Now there's a veg friendly town...

Shalom,

Gail
You're right, it was Lake Hiawatha. I like Veggie Heaven but there's only so much Chinese food I can deal with on a regular basis. I've heard L.A. is veg friendly. But thank god we have NYC nearby. Have you been to Red Bamboo in the Village? It's so good. A new vegan place opened in Brooklyn yesterday....I'm probably gonna check it out this weekend.

Yes, I totally agree with you about Chinese food. Thanks for the recommendation of Red Bamboo. I'll certainly give it a try when I'm in the city. Wish there were more places right here in NJ though. Of course, it sure is better for my budget to bring lunch when I go to work and with finances a bit tight we don't go out to dinner much any more.

BTW, your kitty is just adorable! I'm counting the days until I'll be able to adopt again. We used to have a couple of outdoor cats years ago, but when they passed away (at far too young of an age, IMHO) I decided not to get another unless I could keep her inside. This was something of a problem due to my son's allergy and my husband stubbornly insisting that the cat would be miserable indoors.

But I'm happy to say that son Thomas is nowhere near as sensitive as he once was - and will be leaving for college in the Fall anyway -- and spending time with our other son's indoor-only cat (a very sweet, happy and well-adjusted kitty) has convinced my husband that keeping a feline inside is O.K. I'm holding off going to the shelter until we've moved into our new place (currently trying to sell and might have to rent for a while), but I can't wait 'till I can bring home a dear new companion. :)

Gail

I live in central NJ too.... Ive been to the

Golden Teapot A+ a little on expensive side though

Singapore in Cherry hill A

Ghinnis Grill in philly, pa A

Ghinnis i would think id really have a craving for more than both of the other two being its all meatless american food and not chinese type foods. My g/f ate the chicken parm steak sandwich and she thought it was ok but i guess she has to get used to the taste, i thought it was great. She liked both vegan cakes she tried. I had fake meat pizza slices and bbq fakechicken pizza which was awesome too. my buddy that is a meat eater only had pizza with fake pepperonis, i told him after i started eating my "mockchicken" that it wasnt real and he was suprised, he ate it anyway without complaint... said and done was over $20 for all the food lol

I don't know if you're vegan, but if you are keep in mind that Gianna's recently found out that the cheese they've been using on their pizza isn't vegan. They're switching to another non-vegan cheese. I haven't gotten to the Golden Teapot yet. Someday....it's quite a distance for me. Today I'm going to my new favorite place, Foodswings in Brooklyn (www.foodswings.net). It's vegan fast food, and it's out of this world (and cheap, too

That's great that you'll be adopting a shelter kitty. I used to volunteer at a shelter (that's how I ended up with a full house
). If you go to Red Bamboo, try the Soul "Chicken" Sandwich, the buffalo wings, and the vegan chocolate-covered strawberry shortcake. Good stuff

Well it looks like they sold out, they had the non-vegetarian menu out. It wasnt there Mother's day so it must have been a very recent change. blech.

That sucks. Do they still have alot of veggie food? Not that I would ever go there again now that they decided to add dead animals to their menu, but I'm just curious.

Oh no, not that bad of a sellout. They just had a small paper "meat" menu they gave with the usual 154 item vegetarian menu.

Sort of like a reverse regular Chinese place that has a square box of 5 veg items in it.

The Cherry Hill location is no longer Kosher either. I'm not sure whats up with that, the Philadelphia is still Kosher. I dont know if the one in Philadelphia also has a meat menu.

It's still the same place with the same huge vegetarian menu. They just added a small paper "meat" menu. Its kind of like all the years us vegetarians had to suffer with the little square box of 5 vegetarian items in regular resteraunts, only now the square box is for the meat eaters.

They are also no longer Kosher. I am not sure what's up with that either. The Philadelphia one is still listed as Kosher but I dont know if they now have a "meat" menu either.

I live in a little town called Woodbury. Ever heard of it? I am originally from Center City, Philly. But moved because of my dads job, as a fireman. We loved to far away from his station in Deptford, and he was always late. So we had no choice.

Hey fellow New Jersey folk! I just discovered this thread. I live in Jefferson Township in North Jersey, but live 5 days a week in West Long Branch for college.

My favorite NJ veg restaurants:

1: My fave, Down to Earth! It's ALL VEGAN! Yummy cookies and apple pie!

2: Veggie Works

3: Veggie Heaven

4: Zafra

5: Golden Teapot

Anyone interested in going to the vegan Thanksgiving potluck held by the VSSJ? If you are, contact me because if my friend will go with me, I'll be there!!!!

I was just at Down to Earth Saturday night. Veggie Works is my favorite off of your list. Did you know that they are moving to Red Bank? I'm not sure when, but before the end of the year I believe. As you know, parking in Red Bank sucks, so I hope they found a place that has a parking lot. I think it's going to be on Monmouth Street, which is where the Count Basie Theater is I believe. Have you been to Veggie Heaven in Parsippany and Teaneck? The Teaneck one has a bigger menu, a few non-Asian food specials (the meatloaf & meatball sandwich is good), and really good vegan cheesecake.

YES! Veggie Works is moving to Red Bank??? YES! I was so sick of driving to Belmar! Parking in Red Bank makes my life hurt. I HATE it! But, I looooove Red Bank!

I went to VH in Parsippsany. It was YUM! Parsippsany is pretty close to my house, so I went to that one.

I know how you feel. Hard-to-find parking should be worth it since it's about 12 miles closer than Belmar. I just hope they're not closed for any length of time in between moves. I also heard they won't have a salad bar at the new location, which sucks. I used to like to eat a lot of salad first so I wouldn't finish my entree so I have some to take home. And since you often have to wait so long for a table and their service is so slow it was nice to be able to eat something before the meal comes. Oh well, I won't complain, as long as they stay open I'll be happy, since there was rumors of them closing for good.

If they move to Red Bank, that would mean two awesome veg restaurants within a 5 mile proximity of one another...that's it, I'll never be able to get out of Red Bank than lol. I almost live there now as it is. When I go home, I actually miss Red Bank lol. It's a bad obsession.

There's another place in Red Bank, also on Monmouth Street, called The Eurasian Eatery. They serve dead animals, but they have a decent amount of vegan options. I went to Veggie Works tonight, and the waitress said they have to be out of their present location by the end of November. She doesn't have a set date as to when they'll open in the new one, and she doesn't know if they'll have a parking lot.
