Hey everyone,

I just registered to the veggieboards a few days ago and figured I'd let you guys know a little bit about me.

I'm 18 yrs. old a in my first semester at a junior college. I've been a vegetarian for almost 9 yrs. and a vegan for 6. I've learned so much about animal rights and myself in the past few months however, because I've decided to become more involved. I also belong to Peta2.com and have done some volunteer work with them. Umm...I'm in a band, and I sing and I looove it and music in general. Oh and I'm from Illinois..anyone else from IL? Welp, that's about it...later.

Hey,

this is JoyFuLGirL7....I don't know what happened but my account got messed up and they wouldn't let me post anything on here, so I had to change my account completely...so sorry. Anyways, to answer the questions, the band I'm in is just starting out and it's basically like emo...even tho I hate that word...with a little bit of rock, punk, folk....everything! We should have some songs on mp3.com soon and I'll tell you when we do. And, I live by Rockford, Illinois....do you know where that is? My town is sooo small...I don't even bother to name it Kinda sad, but it's nice here. Anyways, I need to sleep now....thanks to everyone who wrote! later.

hey joyfulgurl7. i've been kinda curious lately about folks who have been raised veggie/vegan. it seems kinda silly, but i would think they would be more inclined to rebell against their parents wishes. those audacious omnivores i swear! hehe.

well, on the flipside. i think possibly any veggie/vegan parents are instantly more caring and nurturing of their children...so maybe if they did their job well this wouldn't be a concern.

whaddya think?

btw, welcome to the boards!

Well, neither of my parents were vegetarians...actually, no one AT ALL in my family on either side is. I'm all alone. I'm not sure if you thought I was because of how young I started or if you were just asking my opinion...but I'll still answer it

I think that if parents are vegan/vegetarians, and kinda "force" it down a child then the child may definately rebel, as they do so much with religion. However, I plan to let my kids decide for themselves. Because my boyfriend at this time isn't a vegetarian (he just doesn't eat red meat...and that's probably as far as it's gonna go, unfortunately), I think my kids will get to see how one lifestyle is different from the other. When I feel they're old enough to learn or when they start asking questions, I'll give them all the information I can and then they can make their own decisions. This way, they won't grow up hating me by me trying to force-feed them my beliefs. But yeah, fortunately for me, my parents both smoked since I was very very little, so I grew up HATING cigarettes and when all of my friends started trying them, I never did because I was always so angry at my parents for doing it...so, in a way, rebelling can be a good thing . I don't know if that answers your question, but I did my best.

Welcome. I too live in Illinois (Beardstown). What is the name of your band so that I can scope out mp3.com in the future. Warning! If your emo sounds like typical Dashboard Confessional or Saves the Day I won't be overly joyed, not that it should matter to you. I just get tired of people introducing me to new punk bands that when I listen to them all sound like cookie cutter emo groups. What ever happened to the punk bands that rock instead of whine (A dying breed)? At any rate good luck with your music career, hobby, or however you view it.

P.S. being located somewhat hear chicago have you ever heard or seen the band N.I.L.8. They are from Springfield (near my locale) but play in Chicago from time to time. They'll never be signed (by choice and possibly sound as well) but they were my first intro to local music and I am very found of them.

I'm out.

Anyways, I just thought Id write back since my internet just started working again after teh weekend. bye everyone.

i assumed only children with veggie/vegan parents would be veggie/vegan themselves relatively early on. it is impressive to me that at such a young age you had the resources to make such a choice! i didn't start considering "things" really until i hit 9th grade. i didn't start to do anything really about things until i fell off the rough train ride that for me was K-12 education.

anyhow. i don't want to make you feel uncomfortable or single you out. its just interesting and different for me.

was there anything in particular that made you aware that a veg*n diet is better in some way?

if i may share. i learned early on about health and how some people look healthy but aren't. how many have heard the line "i can eat whatever i want and not worry a bit....just look at me, i look great!". i wasn't like that. i gained weight through middle school without knowing it or really why. well...as others liked to say "your just unlucky". all this bull about luck and waiting for change was fed to me and i just waited and did nothing for the longest time on SOOO much, at such detriment, err.

anyhow, upon starting high school i knowingly wanted to do something about it. and unknowingly i took up anoerexa nervosa in open arms. it was a strange time for me. i've allways thought the strangest of my entire life. anyhow. i kept that up for a year or so. i stopped again, unknowingly because i was just tired of keeping it up, and it was making me very...umm, lets just say sick. the bathroom had become my haven, lol! so...lah, lah, lah. that passed many other things occured. i'm out of high school, and well somewhat doing ok. and then the seed of vegetarianism is planted. unknowingly i eat very little meat, or eggs, or fatty dairy. cause of this learning experience i had before, and weight. people ask me if i'm veggie, and well. these 3-4 times got me thinking more...and lah. more time passes. living at home, parents leaving on a long trip. and while talking with my father he brings up that i will have to shop on my own, and for myself. somehow or another i unconciously blurt out that "yah, i could try eating a purely veggie diet". and well, the rest is history. it just all fell into harmonious place after that discussion.

thank you.

Wow it seemed like you had a huuuge growing experience to get where you are today, that's awesome Congrats! Basically for me, my decision was purely based on my love for animals. I don't know why, and it may seem kinda cheesy-Cinderellaish...but my whole life, my family and friends would always tell me I had some kinda connection with animals....because animals who hated people always came up to me and would be totally calm. I have loved animals since I can remember and when I got to an age where it clicked *oh my God, this is a cow, pig, etc!* I just couldn't put that in my mouth anymore..ya know? It became repulsive and I just stopped cold turkey(no pun intended!) and never put another piece of meat in my mouth. Then, after a couple of years I read about veganism and decided I didn't want to condone suffering as far as dairy farms go either, so that's that!
