ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON — Natural Balance Pet Foods recalled two kinds of pet food after receiving reports of animals vomiting and experiencing kidney problems, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday.

The recall includes all date codes of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food. The company does not know the cause of the problem, but said it is focused on one particular lot.

What is going on with all of the recalls?

FYI -- Pet foods are made with Venison etc... to combat food allergies in pets. Pets tend to be allergic because of either the protein, the grain, or the preservatives, so pet foods were created with "novel" proteins and grains for the allergic pet. (And natural preservatives, generally as well)

Here's a link to Natural Balance's website (the recall is on the main page)

http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/

Venison pet food is often used for animals with allergies, as well as for variety.

We buy Natural Balance for our pup, but he gets Ultra Premium. We do get the Venison & Brown Rice treats, though. He doesn't like those. The rats eat 'em.

I've bought the venison before but not in a while.

Screw the premade pet foods. If you can't trust Natural Balance or Nutro, who can you trust. Hopefully this recall doesn't turn out to be because of an ingredient bought from out of the country, while Natural Balance is busy stamping made in the USA on all their bags. I realize made in the USA doesn't mean all the ingredients are from the USA, but I expected better of Natural Balance.

I'm going to start making my own pet food.

I've been trying to call them because I want to hear that without a doubt their other formulas and treats, which I just bought $100 over the weekend, are okay but all I get is a busy signal.

You think they'd at least set up a recording on the matter, the way my cable company does when they have outages affecting certain areas.

My dogs just finished a bag of the venison and brown rice. The Rhodesian has been vomiting on and off but the GSD and the Lab haven't. The GSD had crystals in her urine last month at her vet appointment. She is going for a recheck next week.

I have to buy allergy formulas for the GSD because she has inflammatory bowel disease. Natural Balance allergy formulas are the only foods that she doesn't vomit. Yesterday I bought $145 worth of the Natural Balance duck and potato food and treats.

They were on Nutro before this.

Chula, I hope your Rhodesian is okay.

Looks like the culprit is melamine-contaminated rice protein, which was only recently added to their venison formulas. They're now recalling the canned as well but only again only the venison formula. Supposedly also this rice gluten came from a US supplier. I thought melamine was banned here?

I just gave a can of the venison and rice food to my sister because her dog was on the other crap that was recalled. I told her use this Natural Balance, it's safe. I had it for a while though, so maybe it was from before the rice gluten was added. I hope.

Kinda scary. Natural Balance claims to use only human-grade ingredients in their foods, yet one of these human-grade ingredients was contaminated with an illegal chemical.

At least it appears they acted quickly, as soon as they heard of any problems, unlike the fools at Menu foods.

I still haven't been able to get through to them by phone.

I agree, this is just awful. I also have posted on VB recommending this food too, not the Venison & Rice, but the overall Natural Balance line of foods.

I am glad however that they have acted as quickly as they have, but it still doesn't give comfort to the customers who have already been using this food.

We recently just switched foods to the Costco store brand of food (Kirland Chicken, Rice & Vegetables formula) and all of my pups are doing very well on it. If you have a Costco nearby, I would suggest going and reading the ingredients list, you will be very suprised, it reads just like a super premium food ingredient list.

At this point and time, I'm almost afraid to recommend any dry food, but we have to feed our pets something, right?

While I realize that everyone is being so very cautious right now (as everyone should), this might be another option for anyone looking for a good quality kibble for a very bugdget friendly price.

I feed the Ultra Premium variety (non-venison) to one of my dogs & I'm about as disgusted as it gets with this recall crap. I'd like to know how melamine got into their "human-grade" rice gluten supply coincidentally so close to when melamine got into Menu's wheat gluten.

Also - Natural Balance is made by Diamond, who makes many, many other brands. I'll be interested to see whether more Diamond brands follow now.

OMG, Chula, I hope your dogs are okay!

I've used the venison canned food for my cats before. I don't have any currently. I guess *any* brand can have a problem, and not only pet foods, but human foods too. I thought by buying the "good" stuff, like Natural Balance, instead of generic stuff, my kids would be healthier, but I guess you never know.

I wish I could cook all of my cats' food, but I'd be afraid to. I'd be afraid they wouldn't get some nutrient or something.

The Venison & Brown Rice treats were recalled, too.

I feed those to my rats and I just went in to check on them and Stewart has died. I gave them those treats 2 nights ago.

There is something seriously wrong with this system.

Thank you. This is a pretty hard blow. My mother just sent me the e-mail stating the treats were recalled and I told her about Stewart.

We're only giving homemade treats and things now. I am glad I gave my hamsters the other treats. This is just ... it's murder.
