I live next door to a drunken brute known as "Big Charles" who is currently holding two of our animals friends in slavery in his backyard -- a cute beagle and an angry American bulldog. These animals never get to run free through any fields. All they get to do is watch Big Charles grilling up their fellow animal friends on his disgusting, smokey black grill

I happen to know that right now Big Charles and his complicitous girlfriend are motorcycling near Reno for the next 3 days and they left the dogs all by themselves I already went to the store and got them some vegetarian dog food, but I feel like I should do more. When African-Americans were being held in slavery, was it enough to just toss them some food??

Here's my question: Would I be justified to help the dogs break free? What if I just opened the gate? I would take them in myself, but I'm sure Charles would find out, and I would hate to think what his response might be.

I'm so confused. I fear for the dogs' safety but wouldn't that be better than their horrifying life with Big Charles? I admit I have been crying many nights because I am so distressed by the dogs' howls for help from "the other side of the fence." What should I do?

if the dogs were left without food or water, have you thought about calling your local SPCA to complain

what would you do with them if you were to rescue them from his yard??? would you be able to find homes for them??? especially since you said that you couldnt take them yourself because he would find out

also, would you be fine with breaking the law and possibly getting caught??? 'rescuing' another persons companion animals is also stealing personal property

are the dogs in good shape?

do they get medical care, water, and food?

no one can tell you want to do

let us know how it turns out

Well he did leave them food... meat-based. In other words, he's forcing them to eat their other animal friends

Also, I do not view animals at "property" any more than I view people as "property" so that doesn't worry me. Any ideas where I might be able to take them? I can't bring them to the pound because they will be killed. Also, I'm afraid of the bull dodg. I don't know how I could get him to cooperate.

Big Charles is a jerk. I hate him already!!!!

Let's think this through a bit, Gentle Randy. I'm sure that the advice here will lead to the correct decision as to how you should handle this tragedy-in-the-making.

I'll say a prayer for those puppies and hope the braintrust here can provide guidance.

i dont view animals as property either, but the law does

and if he provides his animals with shelter, food, water, and medical care he isnt breaking the law

lots of places have no kill shelters, but i dont think they would be willing to accept the dogs if you happen to tell them that you stole them from your neighbor because you were displeased with what he feeds them

sorry bud

I hate to say this, but that poor dog only knows what he has been taught. You might have to bribe him with the food he knows now. In other words, you might have to feed him some of that poison to get him to leave his shackled existence and move to freedom. The bulldog can be a beautiful creature and I'm sure that this animal will sense the loving and caring you have for it.

I second Caroline's post and suggest you call your local ASPCA. (www.aspca.org) Feeding companion animals meat-based food is not a crime, but neglecting them is. Even if they are left with food, if they are by themselves for a prolonged period of time I would consider that neglect. You mentioned Reno... are you in or near Nevada? If so, then another concern would be the heat. It is scorching this time of year in that part of the country (and most other places), and animals need to have somewhere cool (or cooler) to retire to. On 100 degree days, a shady tree may not be enough. And do they have an adequate, clean water supply?

I would call the ASPCA and these are the things I would focus on. I would not harp too much on the meat-based food since (whether you agree with it or not) that is the norm these days and not likely to result in much action or sympathy from most people/organizations.

OK... I'm just thinking out loud here, so don't act until more people give their opinion.

How about calling the police and trumping up the charges? Make some false allegations that won't get him in too much trouble, but enough that everyone (except Big Charles ) benefits from the intervention. In the balance of things, it's a better outcome that he should maybe get a little trouble from the authorities and then move on with his life AND the dogs get a respite from the hell-on-earth that is their current existence.

Again, please don't act until a few people give some opinions. I'm just thinking out loud here.

and as someone who used to have and worked with dangerous (aggressive) dogs...

i highly reccomend you stay away from the bulldog if you fear that he has a bad temperment and you do not know how to properly handle an aggressive dog

spa_girl, i believe its legal to leave a dog outside in 100 degree heat as long as it has some shade

but of course laws can vary state to state

calling your local SPCA or ASPCA would definitely be better, IMHO, than stealing the dogs. plus they would know specifics on the laws such as dogs outside in heat, or left unattended for 3 days, etc

you said the dogs have food, do they have water?

they would have to have one hell of a water bowl to have water for 2 dogs outside where its hot for 3 days

the owner has done nothing wrong, skimmy

how would you like it if i called the police and made **** up about you simply because i didnt like you or because i dont like what you feed your animals???

and how exactly would everyone benefit from that situation?

the dogs would probably end up at a packed kill shelter, the bulldog would get put to sleep because of its alleged temperment problems

There is no way there could be enough water for that many days, since you're talking about Nevada in the summer.

This is cruelty to animals, in my opinion.

Caroline, I was just thinking out loud, hoping to get a little guidance from the collective. I will say that it's not at all clear to me that Big Charles "has done nothing wrong," but I concede your point.

Please stay tuned, Gentle Randy, for more advice. I flew off the handle.

I could tell stories that would make you understand where I'm coming from, but I really just want to help those two animals at this point.

Thanks, Spa_Girl. Unfortunately Big Charles has left them plenty of animal-based food and he has a large shaded patio and a swimming pool (where he "entertains" his fellow Harley Davidson enthusiasts until 3AM many a weekend night... but that's another post.) His dogs actually enjoy swimming in Big Charles's pool often, although I fear what the chlorine must be doing to their skin, hair and eyes?? Could I report him for that? The only thing is, I have to admit that I am a little frightened of what Big Charles might do to me if I report him to the animal welfare authorities.

He knows that I am involved in various gay rights and animal rights causes. I once made the mistake of mentioning animal rights to him, for which I was ridiculed.

Going back to something scareyvegan said: where can I find these "no kill shelters"? Also, would I be justified to perhaps shoot the bulldog -- Big Charles named him "Adolph" -- with a tranquilizer dart or something so I can get him into my car for the ride to a shelter?

I'm feeling freedom in the air today.

Okay, gang.

First, it does not sound as if "Big Charles" has committed any crimes. Do you know that he has no one looking in on the dogs while he is away?

Gentle Randy - just because someone raises pets differently than you would does not constitute abuse. There is nothing wrong with a meat-based dite - guess what real doggies (i.e. wolves and coyotes) eat in the wild? This ain't a Disney movie, sunshine.

Skimmy - be advised that lying to the police is a crime. Not something I would recommend.

In some ways, the way this is written sounds a tad like a troll post.

Tame, you're correct. I admitted to flying off the handle a bit, and I also asked him to wait for everyone else's opinions. They're coming in, and they confirm what I admit -- that I was out of line.

Now, I'll ask this with all due respect and restraint:

How many undernourished, suffering, humilated animals have you personally rescued? How much pain have you witnessed some of these "pets" endure from owners who claimed that they had done nothing wrong?

I don't minimize anyone's diligence, and I think that Gentle Randy's posts here are a good sign that his heart is in the right place.

scareyvegan, I can't think of any other way that I can get the bulldog into my car. I don't even know how to shoot a gun. If you can offer suggestions, please do.
