She'd been in the nursing home for many years after some strokes (caused by smoking). She was totally different after them, and the past couple of months she changed even more, and was sleeping most of the time. My Mum had spoken about her getting worse, and my grandmother's best friend didn't think she'd see the year out.

Today my Mum visited her, and said she was in bed all day. The last time I saw her she was in her wheelchair (my grandfather's car was in the repair shop after an accident so I was taking him in). I thought to myself today how I should go visit, and thought "not today". I won't ever get to visit her again now.

Not that I did much when I did visit. She'd often tell me to go after 5 minutes.

Just before I was told she'd died I felt a sense of forboding. My mother seems alright, apparently my grandfather is real upset (haven't seen him yet), my younger brother is quiet, and my youngest brother, who just happened to be out this way tonight, is quite upset. My brother's girlfriend is going to be very upset.

I myself am am teary eyed, and the hunger I had just an hour ago has totally gone. I'm definitely upset but don't seem to be showing it (it's always been different when a family pet has passed away compared to a family member..... with the pets I become a blubbering mess).

My grandmother said, before her first stroke, that she didn't want to lose her dignity by being confined to a bed all the time. It seems that was about to happen but she's avoided it.

My grandmother's best friend, who went to school with her and moved to Australia from the UK with, was glad she'd been there to see her hours before. In a way it was probably good I never saw her in her really bad state in bed (when visiting I saw others like that and I hated it).

I wish my brothers would stop smoking; I don't want them ending up like she did.

Kurm, I am soo incredibly sorry. I can't sympathize with you as well as other could, but I always feel deeply saddened when someone has experienced something like this. I wish you guys all the best...

And don't feel guilty. Things always happen like this. It's not your fault. Don't beat yourself up over it. Just keep looking up, you'll be okay.

My Grandpa feels the same way about being confined in a bed. He already was in a wheelchair. Now I think he may have prosthetics. I haven't seen him in a long time, as well, due to situations out of my control. Like I said, things happen, and I know you're hurting.

*hugs*

Thanks everyone. It's 3am here and I think I'll be able to get to sleep now. I think my morning is going to be busy with helping to organise things. I'm so thankful she went so quickly and peacefully; so many people don't.

You have my condolences, Kurm. (BTW, I'm like you in my differing outward expressions of grief when a human family member dies vs. a non-human.)

I'm very sorry for your loss. I've lost all of my grandparents, and I know how difficult it is. My thoughts are with you and your family.
