So my grandmother is my favourite family memeber in my entire family, I love her to pieces and when I went vegetarian she didn't say anything offencive only "Be carefull that you get all you need". She asks me everytime I talk to her, are you getting everything, how are you getting your omega 3, where are you getting iron from. Not in a annoying way just in a you know I love you, don't get sick, kind of way.
She is living of a no carb diet, which as far as I can tell is, well, no carbs. no bread, no pasta, no rice and all that jazz. However a perfectly good dinner is apparently fried minced meat wrapped in cheese with some very small portions of veg. She is loosing weight, which is her goal, but I can't help but feel that it's just not a very healthy diet.
Now I don't want to critisise her on her choice of diet since she is very carefull not to do so with mine, but how can I breach the subject of "that much meat and cheese is in no way healthy for you!" without getting the cold shoulder and the "I don't critisise your food!" arguing?

I wouldn't say anything, and to be accurate, she is not on a no-carb diet if she is eating vegetables (and fruit, for that matter).

I would say something, in a polite way about her food choices, but not until she chose to criticise mine next time.

Ask her where she gets her carbs?

i wouldn't worry. once she's in ketoacidosis for any length of time she'll feel like hell and quit. few people stick that diet out for long.

maybe the OP should learn what foods have carbohydrates in them before she lectures anyone, though?

huh? the atkins diet is exactly what she's describing. it's not necessarily no carbs, but a very low carb ketogenic diet. meat, cheese, low carb veggies. the whole idea is to induce ketoacidosis. i wouldn't quibble with the op based of zero vs near zero. that's picking nits. the op is talking about no substantial carbs. maybe you are the one who should learn before you lecture, huh?

Don't be obtuse, you know that she means starchy carbs. And a "very small portion" of veg is not a significant amount of carbs in her diet. Do you have to turn EVERY thread into something about raw foodism, no matter how inappropriate or unrelated it is?

I know the difference between carbs. and she says herself she is following a no carb diet or a atkins, allthough eats small amounts of veggies and fruit (which is great). Sorry for the confusion. Also I don't want to lecture her, thats kinda the point. I am simply asking from a somewhat ignorant point of view, can the atkins/no carb diet actually be healthy and if not do I say anything? I'm keeping quiet for now as some of you suggested, I feel like whatever I would say to her now would come out as a parody of everything that annoys me when people comment on a veggie lifestyle. Like commenting if she gets sick (it's because you're not getting this and this).
I just worry about her, thats all, I'm not looking for an excuse to lecture her on her bad dietary habits.

The Atkins diet is not healthy at all. Its aim is to induce ketoacidosis, a horrible condition - I am diabetic and have almost died from ketoacidosis twice. The first time I was comatose.

On the plus side it is so horrible that most people on the "diet" will eventually give it up to stop themselves feeling so awful. The bad effects are reversible if it doesn't go on too long.

Then I should just sit and wait for her to give it up then and rather suggest some more healthy lifestyles when she comes out of it? And if it does go on long I guess I could always just very carefully start a "hey gran, I read this the other day, would you feel comfortable discussing it with me?" conversation.

It's hard to say without knowing your gran. I couldn't even convince mine to give up lard after she had a cholesterol/blood pressure related stroke. Yours seems pretty clued up on nutrition in certain ways so perhaps print something off about the dangers of Atkins and show it to her in a "I stumbled on this and now I'm worried about you, gran" kind of way?

What the heck are you talking about? Weird......did you even read my posts? I don't see anything about raw foods, and I assumed the OP's grandmother was eating cooked vegetables. This is one of the oddest posts I've ever seen on VB. You said something about raw foodism; I didn't.

Thanks for clarifying. The dairy products have a small amount of carbohydrates, too.

Oh please, I'd have given it 2 posts before you were saying how rice, bread etc. is evil and nobody needs it and should get their carbs from fruits.

Allow me to show some recent examples of what I'm talking about...

http://www.veggieboards.com/newvb/sh...50#post2962150

http://www.veggieboards.com/newvb/sh...83#post2959983

http://www.veggieboards.com/newvb/sh...32#post2952132

I'm sure you're aware of the rules, at 6,345 posts here on VB, about reporting a post if you think it violates the TOS. Otherwise, discouraging and harassing members is not allowed.

As for your posts that you have listed, the first has nothing to do with raw foods, but of course it's on topic and a simple google search could provide you info on people with allergies and eating grains; and the others are, of course, on-topic. Unlike your post here.

I have never said rice, bread, etc. are evil. You're just making stuff up. If you want to argue with someone, why not PM me, anyway. I guess you wanted to publicly fight or pick at someone today?
