I just had to share.

a pretty major fire occured in the townhomes across the street from my condo. Two and a half townhomes were burned--one's completely gone. all of the people in that building were evacuated and won't be allowed into their homes tonite.

So, what's the situation?

well, the home in which the fire started--mom and three boys were home, as were four cats. Mom and boys got out; the cats are presumed dead. Their house is completely destroyed.

the home to the left, into which the fire spread, was an end-unit. the owner wasn't home, and he had two cats. They fled to the lower levels of the home and the fire department brought them out. I told the officer minding the street that if they needed to shelter the animals to bring them to me. They did. I have two kitties right now in my home--they don't appear to have any damage, but i made an appt with the local vet to take them over ASAP. right now, i'm stuck because the fire trucks and other vehicles are blocking all entrances so there's no getting out quite yet. The EMT gave me a small, hand-held oxygen tank and i oxygenated both kitties. I'm using an old plastic sweater box as a litter box for them--i used october j's bedding, but they dont' seem to mind that. another neighbor gave me some cat food, so i have food and water for them in some low bowls. they're staying in my bedroom right now; they're pretty shocked so i made a little bed area for them and hopefully they'll be ok. So far, the owner of the home hasn't been notified--no one knows his work or cell number.

the home on the right of the completely burned home is only partially burned. they lost the back, upper floors. Their cat got out safely, but they cannot take the cat with them to their temporary shelter. So, i have that cat as well, separate from the other two in the yoga room. I am using another sweater box and some old tupper ware for food and water. She just seems a little spooked.

The home next door--completely untouched--had two cats and a parakeet. The parakeet is in the same room as my parekeet--where october J and i are right now. and the two cats are in the living room hiding under the sofa and hissing at each other. i have a third litter box for them and food and water.

In my kitchen, i have a rat, gerbil, and hamster in different cages. they're with me now too.

So, i have a little zoo going on right now. It's kinda strange. Hopefully, i'll be able to get out of here soon and take the two kitties who were exposed to smoke over to the bet soon. the fire is out, but there are still 4 fire trucks and a number of other vehicles here. Oh, and the press.

that's what's going on here. how are you?

You're a good person for taking in all your neighbors' pets.

yeah, i just wish i could get to the vet. our cool vet (not the one who keeps telling me to prepare for october j's death even though he admits "it's the healthiest rabbit i've ever seen!") said she'd come our way (and walk the 1/2 mile or so from where they let you park) to come and check on them if i didn't get there by seven.

the police and fire dept think that it will be another 45 minutes at least. so, luckily she's willing to come to me.

i'm keeping the cats separate in case of feline leuk. you never know.

Aww thats wonderful of you, I know I would be incredibly thankful to have my kids taken to the vet and looked after if something like that happened here. I hope everyone gets to go back to their respective owners soon, it sounds like you've got quite a lot going on right now, lol.

yeah, so the vet came to us. the trucks and everything didn't leave until 8 pm. so, she walked over and said that they were doing great. she didn't charge for the care either--which was great.

when my husband went home, we walked out to look at the damage. we saw the guy who owned the house, but no one told him we had his cats. he was really upset, and i heard him say "into the cell phone"--they won't let me in, and i can't find the cats!" he started to cry.

i went over to him and said "is this your place?" he said it was, and i said "i have your cats! they're fine. the firemen found them and i said i would take them until you came home--they didn't tell you?" he said they ddin't, but came over right away. The vet had just left, but i told him that she said they were perfectly fine and i showed him that i gave them oxygen and washed their eyes.

he just sat in our living room crying and holding them--it was pretty intense for all of us.

we told him that if he needed us to keep them while he found a place to stay, that would be fine, but he told us that his mother was going to hang on to them. I gave him the 'litter box' and other stuff that we'd been using for them--as he didn't have access to these either.

the other people came by and picked up their animals this morning. most of them are back in their own homes, but those that aren't have found palces to stay that allow pets.

so, it's a quiet place around here now. everyone got fed, a bath and cleaned cage (if they came with a cage), and a once-over by the vet while she was here.

now, the neighborhood is organizing a bit of a clothing/supplies drive for the three familys affected. I bought a couple of old navy and staples gift cards for them to buy what they wanted and i knew that one of the women affected was a nurse, so i got her a gift certificate to the place where you buy nurses uniforms and scrubs near where i teach yoga. She told me she knew where it was and would go there.

So, things are moving right along. restoration services are here to start the cleanup and rebuild. things are settling down.
