can anyone recommend any bands to me? i feel like i'm probably missing out on a lot of great lesser-known bands.

this is the sort of stuff i listen to now:

Tool

Finger Eleven

Disturbed

Staind

and some slightly less heavy stuff like

Default

Matthew Good

Jarvis Church

U2

i'm looking for more of the heavier stuff, similar to Finger Eleven (i know most of you don't know who that is) but not super heavy death metal though i do like some of it

LF - I'd strongly recommend you check out the samples online of the new album by The Mars Volta. Very strongly. Towards the lighter-end, maybe the new Grandaddy album? I haven't heard all of Elephant by The White Stripes, but from what I have heard, I'd recommend it.

Yeah, I'll second System of a Down. Brilliant stuff. What else in the heavy modern rock category is any good...

I don't suppose you like Creed, do you? They're not for everyone, but I like several tracks off their first and third albums. The second one seems to have been most popular, but it didn't hold up quite as well for me over time.

Foo Fighters' "One By One" is great.

"Songs for the Deaf" by Queens of the Stone Age is pretty good, but die hard fans will tell you to go for their older stuff (like "Rated R"). I'd say the album has four excellent tracks on it, so you may want to buy it used instead of new, but it's worth $10 easy.

I really like the new Coldplay album a lot ("Rush of Blood to the Head").

Interpol's "Turn on the Bright Lights" is pretty cool, but not as "jamming" as some of the bands you mentioned. Moodier.

Stay away from Zwan... that album blows. If you don't have the Pumpkins' "Siamese Dream," get that. The best Corgan album ever, IMHO.

Grrl rock: Bikini Kill's "Pussywhipped"

More of same, maybe more listenable: Sleater-Kinney's "Dig Me Out"

Chilling psychedelic BritRock: Spiritualized's "Let it Come Down" and (if you're in the mood to be challenged) "Ladies and Gentlemen, We are Floating Through Space."

Blur: "Blur" and "Parklife"

Heavy stuff:

Halldór Laxness by MÃ*nus (say mee-noose): They're from Iceland, and they started out as an experimental hardcore band, but this album right here, their newest, leans more toward a "stoner rock" vibe, kind of like Queens of Stone Age but better. The music still gets pretty heavy at times, but almost all of the vocals are singing rather than screaming.

mp3's:

Romantic Exorcism

Here Comes the Night

..and one from their last album, Jesus Christ Bobby: Chimera

Burn, Piano Island, Burn by the Blood Brothers - Too artsy to be a strictly hardcore punk band but too hardcore to be a strictly art rock band. If more punk bands were willing to experiment with their sound like these guys, there wouldn't be so much blandness in the genre. They have the basic three-piece band set-up, but it's mixed with duel vocalists, a variety of keyboards, piano, glockenspiel, and even acoustic guitar.

Blasphemy! All right, Meg isn't the greatest drummer, but she knows how to play 'em with passion (she beats the sh*t out of those skins), and Jack White can write a damn good song. When this whole garage rock trend is over with, the White Stripes will still be around making good music while all the novelty acts will be playing the next big thing.

dude, when you say he writes good music, you're crazy!

cause man, ewwwwwww! heh. the lyrics have nothing going for them. and the music...it's so..so...unoriginal and with no variance at all. it's just...yeah, i really don't dig it. anyone could play their stuff. but hey, if you like em ya like em so that's cool. i just can't tolerate their 'music.'

Rollins Band is currently 'doing' Black Flag if they haven't already passed through your area.

For softer stuff you should try:

Augie March (www.augie-march.com) - cerebral stuff

BTW Epski - Zwan is awesome. So its not angry nor is it the Pumpkins but MSOTS is a pretty good album. Its just more pop than the Pumpkins and a lot of SP fans don't like it but to each his own. I guess if you're stuck on Siamese Dream you didn't follow them through to Machina either? Too bad fans don't evolve with bands.

I'll confess that I haven't heard "Machina." Corgan ran out of air after "Gish." "Siamese Dream" simply expanded and improved on that album. That said, I do like "Adore" quite a lot, surprisingly. I ripped it into iTunes and listen to it quite a bit. But I was pissed that I actually bought the Zwan album, wanting to like it, and it sucked, I really don't feel it was an evolution, so shame on you for suggesting I haven't evolved with the band. I hate everything Metallica's written since "The Black Album" (started my love affair back with "Kill 'Em All") but it doesn't mean I haven't evolved. It means they stopped doing what they do best, lost direction, etc.

I'm always evolving musically. I'm very open minded about music. But if an album blows, I'm not going to bend myself out of shape trying to pretend I like it so I can be hip, cool, with it, and "evolved."

Try Martin Grech. He's a really talented British musician, and his music is really varied. Sometimes he sounds like Radiohead, other times like the Deftones. You should download Open Heart Zoo, Push and Head Sty, if you can

I respectfully disagree that just because you don't like Zwan for instance that Corgan has 'stopped doing what he does best' or lost direction he has simply changed and it doesn't appeal to you. Corgan developed greatly after Gish - which IMHO is not the Pumpkins best work - I reserve that for Adore. Not only did he work on his voice, he also looked outside himself for the first time. Zwan is a completley different band despite the fact that Corgan is the main contributor - and so Zwan's work should not be hel up against SP's.
