Hey I'm trying to gather a collection of all music artists who have basically made it big because the appeared on tv shows. What are some that you know?

The only one I can think of right now is this guy named Grant Lee Phillips. On Gilmore Girls, he plays a guy named Grant ironically. He is known on the show as "the musician." I just got his cd last tuesday after I heard about it from my friend at UMGD. It is so good, you should check out his music. www.grantleephillips.com

Don't forget to tell me some artists that you think made it big because they were on tv like Grant Lee Phillips?

Wasn't there a singer on the show Ally McBeal who always played piano at the bar they all hung out in? I can't remember her name... I think she gained some popularity from that, although I don't know if she "made it big"

The Monkees are the biggest one I can think of. They were cast as actors in a TV show (even though they had musical experience) about a band, and then released albums as the "soundtrack" to the show--they weren't REALLY a band until their later albums, they were just thrown together, and in the beginning, they only sang the vocals on their albums and acted on the show. They had HUGE songs though, and that's what people mostly remember, not the two seasons of their TV show (even though it's hilarious, IMO). I'm a huge Monkees fan. I even met Peter Tork once, LOL.

Anyone remember The Heights from the 90's? Jamie Walters and "How Do You Talk to an Angel"?? Yeah, that lasted . Though I do still hear the song on mix radio occasionally.

Heh. I'd wager that Britney's fame had a lot less to do with her mouse ears than it did with that schoolgirl skirt.

He was first known for the music from DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince long before he got a television gig. In fact, he had to ride the coattails of his music career just to get noticed on TV by calling his show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In his music days he was of course, Fresh Prince, and the other guy was DJ Jazzy Jeff of course.

And now that we know WAY to much about that subject...we return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

The Blues Brothers - Saturday Night Live

Wasn't Christine A a mouseketeer too? I agree that their fame might have started after the show, but it definitely helped them.

Any of the American Idols could qualify.

The Bay City Rollers were on a TV show here in the states. I'm not sure if their US popularity preceeded the show or came afterwards. I also don't know if they were popular in the UK before the US show.
