Can certain types of mushrooms contain vitamin B12? Since mushrooms often grow in bacteria-rich evironments, and mushrooms feed by absorbing nutrients around them, and bacteria produce vitamin B12, I was thinking that it may be possible mushrooms can have B12. Am I correct?

I know that some people choose not to wash or over wash their veggies so they consume a bit of the soil tho I don't if that's enough. I guess that would depend on the kind of compost you are using as well.

Yeah, it all depends on poop levels. So I'll take a supplement thanks just the same.

I think it might be true that soil on our food might contain B-12 from the bacteria, but might it not be better to clean one's food thoroughly and take a B-12 supplement?

I don't prefer poo myself lol but hey, to each their own! I take a pill when mostly raw or just consume fortified B12 foods when not.

since an animal product is utlized for mass produced mushrooms would you consider those products vegan?

This is assuming the person considers sugar filtered through bone-char as not vegan.

I'm just wondering peoples views on this as I am still formulating my own viewpoints towards this.

I always thought they were grown in manure. That's why they're called shiitake.

I just like to say shiitake any time mushrooms are being discussed.

But yeah, they're grown on logs. You can actually grow them yourself fairly cheaply but I haven't tried it yet. One of these days I will have a log 'o shiitake mushrooms in my kitchen.

It's possible mushrooms could contain B12 from the soil they are grown in. However, I've never seen anything where mushrooms are considered a good source of B12. In order to be sure, you should take a supplement or have said mushrooms tested in a lab before each meal you plan to include them in.

Most commercially available mushrooms are cultivated in manure that has been completely sterilzed, so there probably isn't any B-12. If they were cultivated in unsterilized manure, it still wouldn't be a reliable source of B-12, so take your B-12!

Or do you mean the vapoorizer spray from Envy? Now that would be useful.

So just out of interest... If I decided to start growing mushrooms on my allotment which I covered in manure from the Horse Refuge where I volunteer, I wouldn't have enough B12? What about with my other Veggies? I shouldn't have to wash them, I don't put anything on them put water.

I consider mushrooms grown in manure to be vegan. It's not like meat or dairy or eggs where the animal is abused for the product. Horses are going to poop. I don't think they'll mind too much if we use it.

Unfortunately, just about all produce, including organic, is grown using animal by-products. The only way to avoid this is to seek out organic vegan farmers in your area (a rare breed) or grow your own produce. Do a google search on this, and read Organic Inc by Samuel Fromatrz, for a clear understanding of how this works.
