As a filmmaker, I am very much interested in the idea of introducing positive veg*n, particularly vegan, characters into film, so bring 'em on. Seriously.

I have an action comedy right now that includes a vegan protagonist, but she is also a member of an "earth liberation" movement. Because of her "extremeness," and the fact that this is an action comedy, she goes pretty far sometimes (she's a real ass-kicker), and the male lead (one could assume he's omni) gives her a lot of crap. But they do end up having a love scene (sorry to spoil it, but maybe you'll forget in the five to ten years this will take to get to theaters near you).

I'm still working on finessing this piece so that the leads aren't what your average American would consider terrorists. It will be a difficult sell otherwise.

I'm eager to find more for indie stuff, which is what I do. I'm working on financing a low-budget feature in which my character, the lead, does own a regular restaurant, but it was important in this piece to have it be an old-fashioned style bar and grill. That said, he only eats vegan food on-screen, so that I don't have to pretend to eat meat! Plus, I hope to use fake meat in every scene. As producer of the film, it is going to be very difficult. I would be the boss, and it would be my job to feed the crew for three weeks of shooting. They would probably rebel if they couldn't choose their own food, so I may have trouble imposing a vegan diet, which means I would have to actually purchase animal products (besides film, which has animal byproduct in it, though I'm strongly leaning toward digital). My goal is to shoot in an area where there are non-vegan alternatives, to hire every person with the information up-front that this will be a vegan set, and let them know they're free to go "off-campus" for their lunch if they want to eat animal products. For the crew and cast that aren't in demand, this will probably be easy. For the crew and cast that are, they may have certain demands that will have to be met, and I will deal with them as they arise. Making movies can be a pain without being vegan, but I know I'll have a lot more challenges than most filmmakers going forward. Hopefully I can hire lots of veg*n actors as I become more successful.

LOL, soilman. That's not promising. At least you'll have sympathy for the poor writers next time you go see a bad movie. Even bad movies are hard to write.

Any sci-fi movie I ever do, there will be no characters that eat meat. It will be a thing of the past.

As for using VBers as extras, that's a great idea!!! Leads, doubtful, though. Sorry.

i guess what they say about showbusiness being inhabited by judgemental snobs is true.
I said doubtful. As with any candidate, I would need to see a resume and headshot first.

Good luck selling something like that!

I want to see positive portrayals of vegans, but I think it needs to be done more subtly, increasing over time.
