'Sixteen Candles,' 'Breakfast Club' director Hughes dead at 59

By Todd Leopold

(CNN) -- John Hughes, the producer, writer and director whose 1980s films such as "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" offered a sharp-eyed look at teenagers and their social habits, has died, according to a statement from his representative. He was 59.

John Hughes was behind some of the most beloved films of the 1980s.

Hughes, who was also a prolific screenwriter and producer, was at his peak in the 1980s, when his films -- which starred young actors such as Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall and Jon Cryer -- dominated the box office and were hailed by critics for their thoughtful teen protagonists, rarely portrayed with such sympathy in comedies at the time.

Oh, I just read this on the news. I don't know that I could choose between The Breakfast Club and Ferris. He was a pretty neat guy, actually.

Ferris Buellers (sp?) Day Off was one of those films I only watched the first time because there was nothing else on at the time ; I expected usual lame teenage "comedy".

How wrong I was, its definately on my list of most excellent films.

I do have a test today, that wasn't bullsh!t. It's on European Socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European. I don't plan on being European. So, who gives a crap if they're Socialists? They could be fascist anarchists, it still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car.

He directed those under an alternate name, so yes, we will ignore them and focus on the classics I adore oh so much. Most of my favourite movies are 80's movies, and many of those were his creations...

Next movie night I have shall be dedicated to him. I have The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off at home. I am sure my friends can produce copies of some of the other greats.

One of my favourite quotes from that movie, but then, those are endless. Admittedly, I can quote most of that movie as I am watching it and not ever realize I am doing so... out loud... much to the dismay of whoever might be my viewing company at that time.

Me, too. I shall watch them later in Hughes' honor. My cousin, also a Ferris Bueller fan, is a teacher and was subbing one day. One of the students was giving her a hard time, so she ordered him to the principal's office. She asked his name, and he responded, Abe Froman. She got the reference and without missing a beat replied, You're Abe Froman, the sausage king of Chicago? It was classic.
