I was driving yesterday, and I saw 2 guys driving crotch rockets with their girlfriends clutching their backs. None of them were wearing helmets. With the way crazy people drive their bikes these days(going as fast as possible to show off), if they hit something or even wiped out, the chances are high that they would be dead or severely injured.

So, why is there not a nationwide helmet law? I know that certain states have them, but mine does not. So, what is the reason that they don't? Do people ***** about "Big Brother" or something?

The helmet law, like all other motor vehicle laws are left up to the individual states to decide. I live in Missouri, and we have a helmet law.....and people have been complaining and trying to get it changed for years. It is like the seat belt issue......it is for your own protection, but some people just don't see it that way. Are you for or against helmets?

Beth - I am for a helmet law. I am just asking for the "cons" in an argument such as this. What is the problem? How could one argue that?

Btw - I live in (Overland Park)Kansas

Cheeno - EXACTLY. I just don't understand why someone would opposewearing a helmet...

Personally, I don't believe in helmet laws. I do think helmets are a good idea, its just the *laws* I have a problem with.

If a person is stupid enough to ride a motorbike without a helmet, than they deserve the consequences.

Perhaps it'll clear up the gene pool a bit.

Tofuhead, in my home town, the police really struck down on not wearing a helmet when on a pushbike... my brother got countless $50 fines untill it finally sunk in.

Down here in the city you see parents with their kids on pushbikes, with NO helmet! I just couldn't believe it, but you see it all the time, even on the roads... argh! I worry about them!! What are they thinking!!?

Even if they cause that behavior themselves?

I just don't believe in laws that govern personal behavior.

Just my own opinion.

Again, I totally agree with you, Cheeno. I get tired of the "clean up the gene pool" suggestions. Isn't that what Hitler was trying to do?

Sheep - What about actions that (negatively)affect others? Do you not think there should be laws prohibiting those?

I don't take very well to being compared to Hitler, so please don't.

Hitler *actively* tried to exterminate a whole group of people. I was referring to people doing it to themselves--Natural Selection/Darwinism.

Perhaps the basics: injury & property laws. But in my ideal world there would be no need. I believe in personal accountability. Mankind has survived for much longer without "laws", than he ever did with them.

But that's just in an ideal world.

For our world: yes, I think there should be laws prohibiting negative behavior against OTHERS. But not against yourself. I don't believe in legislating morality (sex laws, drug laws, suicide laws). If the only person that it *directly* affects is you, I don't think its the gubermints business.

(This is just the short version. There is a lot more to this of course. But I would save this for the debate boards)

Tofuhead....I was just asking a question. I think wearing a helmet is the smart thing to do..... some people swear by it and some say it is the dumbest law ever made. Not to sound flip about this, but I say, save whatever parts you can!

btw-we live within about 45 min from each other.....I live in Harrisonville, mo....my hubby is from OP

But, isn't the desire the same? For "inferior" persons to be exterminated? (I am not likening his sick methods to you or anything)

Quote:

But, how about the effects it has on hospitalization? Suppose one of my kids got into some drain cleaner or cut his arm badly or something, and so I rushed him to the emergency room, only the last 2 beds were taken by a couple of victims of a motorcycle crash?

What about it? These kinds of decisions are made all the time in ER's--with or without motorcycle helmet laws. Besides its not the *law* that forcing this kind of decision, its the "victims" who decided to do a very stupid thing and not wear their helmets.

A person who is not going to wear a helmet will do so regardless of the law.

Perhaps, but then you better take the issue up with Mother Nature herself, since she designed the system.

Huh? If there was a motorcycle helmet law in effect, those persons would not be in the hospital or take as much care when there...which effects the service that I would receive from a total accident. My point is that, by not wearing a helmet, they are affecting me. Why would one be against a law regulating someone's behavor towards others?
