Here's my case.

I've been a semi-vegetarian [which in this case is eating only seafood meat] since New Years, you see, and my mom has as well. I talked her into it one day after having read a Peta magazine, which had brought me to tears. She is mostly doing it for the healthy side, but I'm doing it for pretty much all the benefits. Besides, it's nice to know that you aren't eating something that has feelings.. and can stare back at you.

Anyway, so it's been several months into this new lifestyle, but I've recently been talking to a friend, and she has gone completely vegetarian. I want to as well, but once I mentioned it to my mom she said I wouldn't be able to maintain enough protein in my diet.

I know she's misinformed somewhat, and I know I should read up more on what other sources of proteins are, but what would be the best to tell her? I want to convince her, but the next night after I mentioned it she cooked grilled salmon. It made me mad, but I didn't want to eat snacks, thus I was forced to eat the steak-sized piece of salmon.

You should look into beans, lentils, nuts, tofu, seitan and other soy products to give you protein bases. Chickpeas are great - hummus, falafel, you name it! You can also get protein from wholegrains, and certain crops such as spelt, which is often made into flour, breads, pizza bases and pasta is a great source of protein. It might be worth you checking out meat subs as well, although some people find these freaky. It might help if you are still at home. It is a myth that veggies can't get enough!

best of luck,

You were only forced to eat salmon if your mother held your mouth open and shoved it down your throat. You could have just had side dishes that night, or prepared food for yourself.

Your best bet wrt convincing your mom you will get enough protein may be to figure out your protein needs for the day, and then tracking how much protein you're getting in the day WITHOUT sea-life and showing her that you're doing fine without.

The list of protein soures pirate moon gave was great. You don't need fish/seafood to get protein.

I think your best bet is to educate yourself as much as you can...

Borrow some veg nutrition books and cookbooks from the library, check out resources on the internet (even our 'Tip of the day' thread').

The more knowledge you have, the easier it will be for you to eat a healthy diet and for you to respond to all your mother's concerns.

Good luck!

Biggest myth about veg*ns that isn't true is the protein myth. People think that because most people get tons of protein from meat, and veg*ns don't eat meat, we're not getting enough protein. In actual fact, the opposite is true. We usually get enough protein, while meat eaters get way too much.

I'd be more concerned with making sure you get enough vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids. For a really good source on being vegetarian the healthy way, check out the book "Becoming Vegetarian" by Melina and Davis.

Firefox on OS X has the platform's spellcheck nicely integrated. It brought to my attention, for example, that it doesn't like "spellcheck".
