My aunt talked he into doing it, and she hasnt decided yet, but it would be perfect for her becuase my mom loves meat...shes actually addicted to it. If it were up to her, thats all she would eat. meat and LOTS of soda everyday. I mean for crying out loud she thinks eating can corn makes her healthy. arrg! its frustrating. What kind of doctor evented an all meat diet?

My aunts like "oh but meats healthy and people have lost weight doing it" I was like but its meast! I mean you eat like a pound of greasy bacon for breakfast and like steak and 2 porkchops for lunch and Fish for diinner. HELLO! how is that healthy even if you drain the grease form it. eww! I'm trying to talk her out of it.

Bleh. I would never have done Atkins, even back when I was an omni. Yuck.

I hope you can talk her out of it. Good luck! Try showing her some statistics etc. that show how unhealthy it is.

show her how high her blood pressure and cholestrol levels will go. And tell her how after she quits, all the weight comes back instantly. And tell her no cake and cookies, that gets lotsa people.

edit: i know there are ways to make low carb everything now...but it's never the same. even to omni's.

Eek.. I am so sorry to hear that. I'm surprised people are still starting this diet given all the information we've learned about it through the media and research.
Well people do lose weight on atkins, but usually not long-term. It sounds like your mom wants a quick easy way to lose weight without eating healthy.... sounds exactly like me. Except I know that I'm decieving myself.

my supervisor developed kidney stones on Atkins, and was doing other kidney damage. when he found that out, he stopped. now he does a more weight watchers kind of thing, and exercises.

This is true, as long as the person on Atkins is actually losing weight. BUT the drop is not nearly as significant as someone who goes on a low fat Vegan or nearly Vegan diet.

Tell your mom she'll get chronically constipated and have terrible breath. These are the two most common short term side effects of the Atkins diet. Unpleasant body odor is another common one. People often react more to direct pain and potential embarrassment more than the possibility of less immediate health consequences.

A couple of years ago my dad, who had recently had triple bypass surgery, started talking about doing Atkins. I freaked out and found as much information as I could about why the diet is unhealthy and what could happen if he did it (he'd also already had kidney stones in the past). Actually handing him the information from reliable sources rather than just telling him did the trick and he realized it wasn't a good idea. Give your mom all the information you can find to support your argument so it's not just a matter of you telling her it's a bad idea.

Oh don't worry, I am! shes already been to the doctor and her blood pressure was elevated. They saud it was becuase she drunk nothing but cokes for 2 weeks and no water, but I still think all the meat she consumes has something to do with it. Thanks for all your advice guys.

Oh yeah. I think it makes perfect sense to replace fattening apples with slimming bacon in your diet.

I did the Atkins diet a bit back, it's the reason I stoped being veg*n for a bit, for weightloss it was amazing I droped well over 80 some pounds in 8 months eating nothing but meat and greens.

I gotta say it stayed off and all my blood work improved drasticly and my blood sugar level's stayed stable and I had no health problems on it but thats me.

However, I never really cared for most meat to start with so it was not something I could stick with.

I much perfer a good veggie pot pie any day.

But to be fair there is a lot of missinformation out there about the Atkins diet, just like people thinking all vegans are scrawny crazy people, many think people who do the Atkins diet are guzzling down a tub of lard daily .

Niether is true.

You can not judge a diet based on some crazies who do guzzle bacon lard daily anymore than you can say a veg*n diet is unhealthy because of all the french fry and coke veg*n out there.

Wow, I can't believe you went from a vegan, to doing atkins. I could never, ever, go back to eating meat. The reason why atkins works is because you're still consuming lower calories, you're just getting those calories in the form of meat. Who wants nasty ketosis breath?? Keep in mind that your brain solely uses carbs for energy. Those atkins people walk around like zombies. I'm 5'4" and 110lbs, you know what my secret is?? I eat less then 2000 calories daily and exercise! Oh yeah, and I eat tons and TONS of carbs!

Your brain does not use just carbs for energy, It does not use carbs for your brain power to begin with it uses glucose which your body can convert from protien to glucose easy enough.

Carbs are just faster and easier

The process of converting protien takes a lot of body energy though which is why people can eat an excess of 2k calories a day and lose quickly.

As for the ketosis you are correct people in ketosis do stink to high holy hell, if you bother to go low enough on carbs to do that.

I'm afraid I loved veggies to much to go that low.

I'm 5'2 and prediabetic since birth, even now lots of carbs even complex ones are a danger to me.

As for the zombie comment I have no idea what your talking about there, anyone on a diet and doing it wrong can be low on energy but I certainly was not.

As for working out, I have always doen that though I admit most people on diets ANY type of diet want to skip that part.

The atkins diet may work for weight loss because it teaches your mecanism that uses food for energy to switch from burning carbohydrates to fat... Obviously if you burn fat you lose weight. But- this diet is not healthful in the long run and may not even work well for everyone in terms of weight loss. There are other less extreme forms of diets like this that still allow reasonable high protein, but does not make your body go into ketosis and have heart problems. One suggestion is the the south beach diet. My mom is on that diet and it is working and seems really good. It is decently high in protein but is more of a whole foods diet AND... you can make it vegetarian version if you like, so you can cook vegetarian meals that are on your mom's diet that you both approve of!
