Oh jeez, it just gets worse. I know there's already a Mike Huckabee thread, but that turned a little off topic and this floored me so much I thought it deserved its own thread. I put this in the Heap because it's a sensitive topic, but if a mod thinks it should go in the Veggie Patch feel free to move it.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cristi...k_b_82630.html

Quote:

Today, Governor Mike Huckabee is scheduled to travel to Georgia to commemorate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. There he plans to join Georgia Right to Life to lend his support, as well as the focus of the national media, to HR 536. This legislation, also called the Human Life Amendment, is a state constitutional amendment that reclassifies the most effective and popular forms of contraception as abortion.

Quote:

James Bopp, a leading anti-abortion attorney...explained what the practical applications of...establishing in law that life begins at the moment of fertilization could lead to..."enforcement of homicide laws against pregnant women, restricting the activities of pregnant women, outlawing contraception and so on."

Quote:

"There are some forms of birth control that really are the destruction of a fertilized egg." One of the editors offered a follow-up question, "Should the government ban that sort of birth control?" Huckabee replied, "Yeah, I personally think there are better ways to deal with contraception than destroying a human life. So, again I'm going to say that I'm always going to make my position on the side of protecting human life."

RESTRICTING THE ACTIVITIES OF PREGNANT WOMEN??????? By this logic, a woman who miscarries might be considered a murderer.

Opinions? Discussion?? Is there actually a form of birth control that kills the fertilized egg? AFAIK, most, if not all, forms prevent the egg from sticking to the uterine wall. And if someone stays on BC when pregnant, it will not kill the baby but can cause it to be born handicapped, deformed, mentally challenged, etc.

If Huckabee by some demonic miracle wins the presidential election, I'm moving to Canada. I will not submit to this evil man's chauvinistic, oppressive will.

That is what always pissed me off about all those anti-abortion protestors. If they want to prevent abortions, maybe they should offer to take those women's unwanted babies into their homes and care for them.

I can't believe he is trying to ban birth control pills and restrict pregnant women's activities. I was mowing the lawn while I was pregnant. You really don't have to restrict any of your activities unless you're on bed rest or your doctor thinks you may endanger the baby by doing something. A woman actually freaked out on me for lifting a box above my head to put it on a shelf because "I could be suffocating my baby and not even know it!". Maybe he'll give all the pregnant women live-in help if he's going to restrict their activities.

Well, it's the language he uses. I really don't think he meant to keep women from mowing the lawn while pregnant. I think he meant monitoring pregnant women in case they do something suspect that might be considered trying to end the pregnancy, like buying a coat hanger or trying to get a prescription for certain drugs or substances that could be used to kill a fetus. You know, DIY abortion supplies, that's what I'm trying to say. Also monitoring their doctors so the doctors don't perform any procedures that would be considered abortion. I think that's what Huckabee had in mind.

Yeah, this guy's a freaking Nazi.

He's not even talking about all hormonal birth control, the title of this thread is misleading.

Fun Fact: The Huffington Post is ****. Talking about the radish you linked would have been more relevant to a discussion of Huckabee.

The Huffington Post is a reliable source of American moderate commentary.

I think the radish would prove to be a better President than Huckabee.

hey, I don't make the news, I just pass it on. I don't know anything about the source but it was posted in a political community where people took it seriously so I'm assuming it's legit.

Amy, I laughed at the idea of not allowing women to buy coat hangers because they might do diy abortions.

"But I need to hang my clothes!!!"

"Nope, you could be murdering your child so I can't let you"

Really? I thought that if you stayed on BC when pregnant (like if you didn't know you were pregnant until far along or the baby pops out to say hi) that it didn't do any damage?

Well really, if you want to prevent a woman from having an abortion there's only one thing to do:

-- Preemptively put all women in prison (if not pregnant) or a padded cell while strapped down (if pregnant).

Since no woman would be allowed to cook, clean, put stress on herself, have access to any poisons (alcohol, rat, etc), clean litter boxes, drive ("was it really an accident, or did she intentionally crash head on with another car?"), take OTC pills, drink excessive amounts of water (you can kill yourself doing so...) or do anything -- everything she does and consumes would have to be monitored 24/7/365 (366 on a leap year). If you don't lock up the non-pregnant women, they might, "god forbid", give OTC pills to a pregnant woman.

Oh yeah, and prevent all men from unsupervised visits to the pregnant women (so no sex, who knows what poisons he might stick on it!)

I think it's only a danger when the woman continues daily bc through the full term of the pregnancy, and even then it's not guaranteed. It's just shown that it may increase the risk of birth defects, but there is no proof stating that if you take the pill while pregnant, your child WILL have birth defects. I suppose it's more of a cautionary thing... I've read that if the woman doesn't know for a couple months and has been taking bc that whole time, it shouldn't be a problem. Beyond a couple months, then I'm just wondering why the person didn't know they were pregnant . I'm paranoid, so if I missed my period once I would immediately buy tests and start freaking out....but I guess some people don't notice stuff like that? Somehow?

Heh, there are cases of women who don't put on much weight and continue spotting to the extent that they genuinely don't know they are pregnant until the baby breaks its way out

I so don't buy this for a second. I hear stories like this all the time, too, and it has got to be such a load of sh.... I remember when I was pregnant, this guy at the bar (I was bartending, not there doing shooters) telling me that his daughter didn't know she was pregnant until she went into labor because 'the baby was positioned really far back'. Please. You would have to be seriously mentally deficient to just not notice that you were pregnant at all, I would think. There is so much more involved in pregnancy than a gradually rounding belly...

Yes, one would have to be mentally ill or on drugs/alcohol and even then, it would take a huge disconnect and an unhealthy dose of denial to be "unaware" to that degree.
