I let my medical marijuana card lapse, as I heard the fee would drop from $90 to $30 after the first of the year. You go through the same procedure, whether you are new or a renewal, meet with a doctor, etc. All fees are the same.

I made my doc apt to get a renewal. While I am there the doc says, "It's too bad you aren't signing up as a new patient because then you could go get your marijuana today, but there is a backlog of renewals that will probably take 6 - 7 weeks.

I ask, "Since I let my card lapse, might I not be considered "new" again?
He says, "I doubt it, but you can ask so and so..." (girl who handles paperwork)

So, when I'm done with my doc, I sit down with so and so to go over my paperwork and she starts to do a renewal. I say, "I asked the doctor about applying as a new patient as I let my card lapse..."

She says, "When did your card expire?"
I say, "October"
She thinks for a few seconds and then says, "I don't see why not"
Seems a little too easy, but this is her job, so she should know, right?
I head with my paperwork to a nearby dispensary and make a purchase - half surprised it worked. I'm really only thinking "cool".

Yesterday, I called my normal dispensary, ask about specials and mention my new patient status, to which she says, "Sure, just bring in all your paperwork and we will be happy to serve you."

While I'm driving there, she speaks with the manager and when I arrive and she has some bad news for me. The girl who wrote me up as a new patient was apparently "stupid" and should not have done so. She said that because they had all of my records, showing all of my past purchases, I could not be considered new to them and if they were to sell to me, they could get shut down.
Her coworker advised me to go across the street to another dispensary, where they didn't know me and "stock up" because who knows how long the state is going to take to handle my paperwork (because of the new/renewal fiasco)

However, I am reluctant to do that, because it seems like fraud. But, I don't want to go months without mm. S.O. advises me to "just get it, you need it" but I am fearful.

I'm not going to die without it, but I will lose weight as eating becomes a giant chore and I won't sleep much.

What would you do, play is safe or go get your pot...I mean medicine.

I would get it. You still have a card right? And the only people who would get in trouble should be the dispensary, and I doubt they'd say anything about it, or even think it's unusual.

Maybe you're just being paranoid?

The only reason that I have a (temporary) card is because the girl made a mistake though and now I know it.

Don't get caught? Sorry, I'm Canadian and no one(by that I mean very few) here does it legally or cares, so I don't see it as a big deal. If you need it, you need it, and it's your right to have it.

ETA I really shouldn't say that not a lot of people do it legally, because I don't really know, just assuming. When there's always a friendly neighbourhood grow-op, why go through the effort?

Wait . . . is this some kind of bizarre hypothetical question asked to us in order to test our moral values, or something?

This sorta reminds me of those situations where a bank accidentally puts a million dollars into your account.
I know I technically shouldn't have the card, but I do and a nearby dispensary opens in an hour. God damn it.

In that case, you give a bunch to a local charity, earn back your karma points, and roll

You could buy it and donate some to the local teens! Then you'll have done your good deed and be golden in the eyes of the universe.

I think you should get it. I try to be an ethical person, but have no problem making exceptions that make sense to me. Just out of curiosity, is it cheaper to buy from a dispensary? I don't smoke pot, but would love to start to help with my anxiety and stress. Unfortunately, my company drug tests and it is not worth taking a chance. I do find it interesting that a person could be on prescribed valuum or other fairly hardcore drugs and that is ok compared to pot.

Valium isn't "hardcore" (then again, pot isn't either) when prescribed at the correct dosages for anxiety.

I think you're ruled out for a medical Mary Jay card if you have any psychological conditions, am I right?

Thanks for the spell check. I knew my spelling was incorrect, but was lazy. lol I hear you about it not being a hardcore drug, but it can be. I know there are a lot of people that are addicted to pain pills. Instead of taking two in a day, they take 10 at a time. I have a friend who was addicted. My point is that he could get a prescription for this terrible drug and people can't legally buy marijuana in a lot of cases. My only point was that pot is no worse than a lot of prescription drugs and some over the counter drugs. The difference is that pharmaceutical companies have lobbyists that work with the government so they can sell these drugs legally. If a major pharma company were to develop a drug with thc, then I bet the government would find a way to make it legal.

Considering I'm all for legalized marijuana in the first place, I totally agree with you. It's just as dangerous to misuse pot as it is to misuse prescription drugs. Thankfully, both can possibly be used (and regulated) safely, in moderation.

In case anyone is curious how it turned out.

I went to a new dispensary and bought an eighth, even though I didn't feel totally okay about it. The next day, my old dispensary called and said that they'd checked with the state and wanted to reassure me that just because I'd "mistakenly checked the wrong box on the form" (new, not renewal) there shouldn't be any delay in receiving my permanent card AND I could use my temporary card until it arrived. So, I was rewarded for bad behavior, essentially. But, yay!

Do they only let you have an eighth at a time or is that all you wanted to get?
