I've read quite a few posts from people this week about nightmares they have relating to their veg*nism. I happen to think that it's a pretty interesting phenomenon that so many of us seem to have these dreams.

Resultingly, I'm interested in hearing ALL of your "Meat-mares", if you have them.

I've had very few dreams that I can remember and one is a recurring dream, breif but recurring.

I'm eating some random meal, maybe steak or a chicken sandwich, and I'm totally digging it. I'm so enjoying the meat. Then suddenly I remember that meat makes me nauseous and I wake up in a panic, usually having to remind myself it was just a dream.

weird

i don't necessarily have meat-mares, but i have a lot of nightmares about animals, particularly rats (tame cute ones) that are horribly mamed and are lying around waiting to die. it's hugely depressing.

I dreamt that I had decided to eat a grilled chicken sandwich because I was sick of not having anything to eat at restaurants. I took a couple bites and was kind of grossed out by the texture and then I looked down and saw it was actually my dog's leg on a hard roll. With mustard I think.

? Ugh.

oh, wow... i'm not the only one who doesn't just have regular meat-mares but connects it to beloved pets too?

my worst one was of the parents having a barbeque, and as usual the smell was making me sick, but then they asked me to get my cat for them, and were bringing in our freshly charred dog! i was so mortified, and then i woke up shaken and queasy, having to find all my furry friends and hold them.

last night i had one where i was reading the ingredients on a label, and there was some new suspicious sounding ingredient that seemed disturbing, but i really don't know if it was in bread or what the product was at all. that one was just weird, heh.

I'm SO glad I'm not alone. I've had some MESSED UP "meet-mares". And two nights ago I dreamed I lived with a beer. A real no-foolin' bottle of beer.

i used to have the most awful recurring nightmares about being in a slaughterhouse. at the end of the dream i would see this bloody, skinned cow's head (like the one on the PETA poster). just sitting there and dripping with blood.

agh.

i don't like to think about it.

I've had about 5 in the last 3 years. Mostly the first couple of weeks after I went vegetarian.

The worst two -

The first one was just a couple days after I went vegetarian I had a dream that I wasn't "pure" yet, and that I still had animal bodies inside me, and when I looked down, my stomach had bars on it and I could see pig parts inside giving my body nourishment.

Ugh!

Then the other really bad one was my fear of not getting enough calcium. In my dream I felt my tooth and it fell right out of my mouth. My gums were raw and bleeding, and the rest of the teeth were all wobbling, and eventually they all started to crumble into dust.

When I woke up it was the best feeling in the world! Aaawwh!! I never felt so good! I just kept feeling my teeth!

Well...

1. I mentioned in another post the bear dream (which was a recurring dream, as well. I am with all these people (like my tribe) and I am dressed in this white Xena like outfit. They put me and a bear on this totally white stage. We wrestle a bit and I kill him- everyone cheers. Then I reach down and rip out a chunk of his flesh and chomp on it while raising my other arm in the air like I just won a boxing round. I don't think it has to do with meat eating, though. Here are the two interpretations I settled on:

1. I am terrified of bears and live in Alaska, where I enjoy outdoors but am always afraid of an encounter. The dream represented me confronting and overcoming my fear. OR

2. The white represented my repressed sexuality and and the bear represented raw, untamed human sexuality. Two sides of my being in conflict and now united (in the dream anyway).

In other bizarre dreams I have been:

-eaten alive by a horse (this is when I was showing)

-chased by a squirrel that turned into a fox.

-terrorized by huge lizards

-hunted by aliens.

man, I think I need therapy...

I have dreams occasionally that people are trying to force feed me meat... Once at a huge BBQ, and my Dad kept shoving a burger in my face! Ugh..

Here's my post from the "Dream a little dream" thread.. A pretty graphic dream.

Quote:

I had this EXTREMELY horriffic dream once. It disturbed me a GREAT deal. Baby calves losing their parents, or the cows being able to see/hear other cows being slaughtered, or both was probably what sparked this dream for me.

Me and a friend were in this very public area (it looked like a concert hall) with our parents. We were pulled aside into a sort of waiting room by an older, eccentric looking woman, and a man with the same look to him. In the room there were many other kids. just sitting there. Some looked extremely pale and traumatized. Then they had us go into another private room, just the two of us. And we were surrounded by screens.. There was this HUGE metal contraption with bins, and it made a terrible sound. One by one our parents were being pulled into the room and put into these bins head first. At that moment we realized that these bins were large grinders. We began to cower, and cry. We were pulled out of the room and back into the waiting room in tears and we were screaming. None of the other kids seemed to have been doing anything about leaving, so we attempted to leave. We got out of the room somehow, and we came into an area full of trees. Shortly after leaving, we saw the man and the lady that came to get us earlier, and they caught us, and brought us back to the waiting room.

I was veg for awhile before this. But this is one of my most disturbing dreams. I was VERY traumatized the rest of the day.

Wow Rigamole, seeing that you posted that, and there were other people out there with teeth dreams, I looked up "teeth dream" in google, and came up with this:

Quote:

Question

I had a dream where I was driving to work and my teeth began falling out! At first I thought they were just loose, but soon I easily pushed them out with my tongue. I was horrified and nearly wrecked the car. Then I woke up and my teeth were fine, but I recalled the dream very vividly. What does this mean?

Answer

Many of us have been the victim of tooth-lose dreams and have carried this concern into the morning.

Here's a quote: "Tooth dreams are open to many interpretations and have been handled successfully by very few of the modern dream interpreters."

This was written in the 2nd Century by the ancient interpreter, Artemidorus. Even the Vedas and texts 2000 years BC talk about tooth dreams. So you can see there is a long history of confusion. Freud and Jung explored the possibilities of tooth loss and hysteria, but modern dream interpreters take a different approach that is more direct.

What, we can ask ourselves, do teeth do? They hold, cut, grasp and generally are the first way we had to do these things. But then we lost our first set, just as we were gaining in self-control and power. And yet, shortly thereafter, a new and larger world and set of teeth appear!

And so, if I have a tooth lose dream, I can ask myself:

1. What parts of my world and life are slipping away?

2. What new larger world will this lead me too?

Lose a tooth, gain a world!

That is pretty great!

Wow, since that's relevant to my life I found it very interesting. I just thought I was so paranoid about my teeth falling out it carried over into my dreams. But I can dig this explanation. Not only does it make sense, but it doesn't in any way imply that I'm losing my mind.

I usually have dreams where I am frustrated with a group of apathetic people and I start screaming about animal suffering and they just ignore me. I also have the occasional, "Whoops, did I just eat meat" dream.

Regarding Mikie's "Crumbling Teeth" dream, i get those all the time, but it's cause I grind my teeth at night. I've cracked a couple of molars due to it.

Meat-mare o' mine: Eating turkey and saying while I was eating it "I don't eat meat". It tasted all metallic and fleshy. I spit it out, and I thought it was so disgusting I woke up with a stomach ache.
