In the last couple of days or so I've suddenly been confronted by a few meat eaters... See, initially I decided to stop eating meat because diabetes and heart problems run in my family and when I was looking up information on a heart-healthy diet, everything I read was really detailed about how bad meat is for you. And since I've also decided I really DON'T want to have an animal suffer or die so that I can stuff my face, when I'm liking a variety of beans and rice so much now... So I've got meat eaters that want to argue with me that only red meat is a little bad for you but not much, you need meat, etc. And that you can't believe what you read, everything is so one-sided, that's just what they want you to think, of course you need meat, etc. Argh!!! And I don't know enough to know how to respond!

how about telling them that:

and then if they keep going on about it, say that you appreciate their concern/interest, but that it is a personal choice, that you've made your decision, that you won't be swayed by their personal opinions/feelings/arguments/wisdom/whatever, and therefore you'd prefer not to discuss it any further thank you.

Tell them about what you read when you researched a heart-healthy diet. Tell them the cattle/meat industry has us all brainwashed that its good for us so they can make money.Tell them there isn't anything that meat provides nutritionally that you can't get somewhere else in a vegetarian/vegan diet.

Tell them that meat rots in your system.

From celestialhealing.net:Meat can stay in the warmth of the intestine for at least four days until it is digested. It does nothing but wait for passage. Often, it usually stays there for much longer, traces remaining for up to several months. Colonic therapists always see meat passing through in people who have been vegetarians for several years, thus indicating that meat remains undigested there for a long time. Occasionally this has been documented in twenty-year vegetarians!

How can anyone think that is healthy/needed?

Just because since we were kids, society has told us that meat/dairy products are necessary to a healthy/balanced diet doesn't mean its true. Its been proven that the human body does better/suffers less ailments on a vegetarian diet. Now that we know that, of course the meat/dairy industry is denying it. Where would they get their money if we didn't all believe that?

Try this next time: "STFU."

Acronym

Sorry, but I'm all about the expedience of just closing the argument in this instance.

I'd be wary of quoting information from websites that are most likely biased - doubt they'll buy that. However, you can refer them to peer reviewed scientific literature. Just go to scholar.google.com or pubmed.gov and run a few searches and read some abstracts.

Just two examples I found within seconds (Sorry, I can't post links but you can search for the title on pubmed):

A prospective study of dietary patterns, meat intake and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus

Associations of plant food, dairy product, and meat intakes with 15-y incidence of elevated blood pressure in young black and white adults: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study.

True. I guess you could always tell them that you don't feel comfortable eating animals and that it makes you physically sick. That's what I say.
