Nigel Robinson from Hull said he called police after trying to download music but instead finding pornographic images on his laptop last November.

As a result social services said he "should not have unsupervised access with his own or other children".
- Full story at the BBC.

What the heck?

(Woopsie, mods, could you move this over to the veggie patch - got the wrong forum by mistake)

I read this on the Daily Mail website their headline was 'Man banned from seeing kids after "apparently" accidently downloading porn'
Was there any need for the quote marks around apparently, it makes it sound so sarcastic...like they dont belive him. Why would he download it then ring the police...Jeez!

Mr Robinson said: "It makes you feel as though you shouldn't have reported it in the first place."
Exactly, should have kept his mouth shut. It's illegal to even have the images regardless of how they ended up being in your possession. That's what happens when the documentation or photographs of something illegal is itself made illegal.

Yet another reason you should not trust the police (more than you absolutely have to).

Don't they have computer clubs or other voluntary organizations in Britain where one can turn for help instead of the police?
Or would those organizations themselves be so "zombified" that they themselves would call the police?

Yeah, I'm not jumping on the "This man is guilty!" bandwagon. If he is being wrongly accused, that's horrible for the child's sake.

That's ridiculous, he was the one who called the police! All they are doing is creating a world where people are afraid to report child porn when they find it, so they are just helping it continue to exist. The guy did a good thing, he should be getting a pat on the back not be penalized for it.

If you buy his story... not sure I do.

I think it's impossible to determine whether this man is guilty or not just by this article.

Yeah there have been a couple of similar stories in the news around here. I'm not sure what to believe either.

You'd like to think that, huh?

You want to believe the worst in people. Is that it? That's awful. I'd personally like to believe he's telling the truth - especially since he called the cops himself. He'd have to be really stupid otherwise.

The government separated a parent from their child without even an allegation of abuse. That's pretty disturbing to me.

Maybe he is a creeper. Maybe he's not. But officially, what we know is that he reported child porn. The reporting on this case has revealed no other facts.

So what will happen for the next parent that finds child porn? Will they report it and risk being separated from their children? Or will they quietly delete it and avoid the hassle?

It doesnt matter whether hes innocent or guilty now.
The media have done the damage because hot headed pedo bashers will never leave him alone even if he is prooven innocent.

There's a kid at my university who got in trouble for downloading child porn, but he was using Limewire at the time and the file he downloaded was actually titled and described as something else entirely. He deleted it immediately upon discovering what it actually was... but they were able to recover the file itself from his hard drive and even though he never actually intended to download child porn, his reputation is now effectively ruined.

Cops do not exist to help people, they exist to enforce laws. If you're very very lucky they might show up at a time when those things coincide, and if you're very very daft you might invite their attention without realizing they aren't going to take your word for how law-abiding you are just because it was you who flipped their on-switch. Which isn't necessarily bad in the grand scheme of things, but don't subject yourself to it.
