I have no clue what type of mix my dog, Tabbi is but it makes her fur double coated, plushie like. She doesn't shed very much but when she does a good amount comes out. I don't rip it out or cut it out, in no way is it hurting her...

I wanted to do something with it...because I'm a freak. I make cotton yarn tails(they're made to look like fox, wolf, ect to replace wearing real ones)and I thought if I made her shed fur into yarn I could make a tail out of it.

People are shrieking at me and harassing Tabbi and I over this, claiming it's cruel and supports the fur industry.

But idk how. I'm not selling it or anything, again like I said I'm not hurting her. I love her, why would I do such a thing?

Any clue of this?

No, I have no clue why people would bother you for making use of fur that you didn't hurt your dog to get. It's not cruel to make something useful out of shedded dog fur. Ignore the Vegan Police.

I wouldn't wear anything like that because I don't like the way fur looks on people, and I would be afraid of sending the wrong message to others. I hate the fur industry with a passion, and I would never want anyone to think for one second that I supported it. That's just me though. Nowadays when I see people wearing fur, I tend to assume that it's fake since fur isn't nearly as popular as it used to be. I'm not sure how you wearing things made from your dog's fur (that sheds naturally) would be supporting the fur industry anymore than wearing fake fur would.

It's your call really. I guess you can tell that I have mixed feelings about it. If I knew you IRL, I certainly wouldn't be trying to make you feel bad about doing this.

I understand you're not doing anything wrong to your dog, but you say it yourself- you're making "cotton yarn tails(they're made to look like fox, wolf, ect to replace wearing real ones". To me, when things are simulated to look like the real thing, it elevates the desire for what is real to the marketplace. Like saying "I know how wrong it is to use animals for their fur, but it's soooo desirable".
Even when I eat a veg burger I wish it could look different, but that's only because our culture has been prejudiced into thinking food ground and shaped as patties are from meat. The more veggies burgers become popular the less burgers are thought of as meat. Fur has a long way to go, and if it's fake, I'd like to see that it looks fake.

I just thought of the birthday cake on youtube that was made to look just a sleeping baby-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m71U2...eature=related

Like, I wont wear 'faux fur' just because of how it looks, then again, I have no problem wearing alpaca yarn because
A) I go visit the alpacas, I know they're kept like pets
B) I make what I wear if it's made out of the yarn, so I'm completely involved in it

Again, its not cruel if you want to do that.

Keeping pets is wrong. How would you like to be kept as a pet?

I don't view having companion animals as wrong, if my usage of the word 'pet' and 'keeping' bothers you, oh well.

Edit: And, if I was an Alpaca I'd very much like to live how they do, same goes for my dog and cat. I would *love* to have their life.

Seeing how you are not, you can't possibly know what you'd want if you were one. Also, even well treated pets will escape when given the chance. How would you like to be well treated, but not be free while you haven't done anything wrong?

No, I can know that I personally, would love to live the life my dog and cat does, the same goes for the alpaca, it's a pretty cush life.

Actually, the dog and cat don't try to escape. You can't really say cats try to escape, when some may be outside cats the hang around the house, or have access to outdoors and... hang around the house. Same goes for the dog too, really. He's walked off leash every single day and never goes more than 25 ft from my side... ample oppourtunity to escape.

I love how you say I can't possibly know my animals are happy, but then say with out a doubt they would escape if they could. Lmao.

Seriously?

My cats have access to the outside. For some reason - they just keep coming back.

Dude - pick your battles. This is not a good one.

Edit: In addition to the fact this has very little to do with the original thread.

As River already stated, how do you explain cats that are let out at night that always return home? Also, my dog has never tried to escape. She was originally a stray, and I'm willing to bet she didn't like it much. She is extremely timid and is constantly looking to me for approval and comfort. (which I am more than happy to give)

You don't have much experience with dogs do you? Dogs really enjoy being around humans. They were bred for companionship. It may be wrong to "use them" that way, but there's a serious overpopulation problem, and considering how well dogs get along with humans anyway, I see nothing wrong with taking care of them as long as they are rescues.

I don't know any furries or cosplayers that wear real ones. I was thinking this was a fox-tail on the antenna type of thing.

Also, Thorham, this thread's not about your opinion on companion animals, although I'm sue you could start a thread to debate it elsewhere.

Yes. Individuals who start to create a demand for something are responsible for the state animal agriculture is in today, because there cannot be enough to supply a demand without factory farming. And it needn't be something you* are seeing taking place in your own back yard either. American puppy mills are already supplying Asian countries with dog meat. We don't need them marketing dog fur there as well. You may think what you do is no more than dropping a pebble in the ocean, but the ripples you cause could be very far reaching.

I hate getting pet hairs all over my clothes. My dog sheds like crazy so I'm constantly using my lint brush. I couldn't imagine wanting to wear animal fur on purpose.
