Yeah, seriously, I don't know why I started this thread, I know there's not much that can be done. I JUST DON'T WANT IT TO BE BLOODY BROKEN. It doesn't actually hurt, I just can't bend the bugger at all or walk on it.

Gah

How do I tell the difference between a sprain and a fracture without an x ray? I'd go to A and E but I don't think they can do much. Is there likely to be a difference in healing time?

I hope it's fine in the morning

I do ballet and run a lot, this really sucks.

Just wanted to say I'm sorry, that's a total bummer. I broke my toe really bad once 1 week before a half marathon I had been training for... I was soooo pissed... Broken toes suck!

How long did it take to heal? I'm signed up for two 10ks in July.

I'm still sort of hoping I'm overreacting and that it will be all dandy by the morrow.

What were you doing when it broke?

I've never had a broken bone before, but I sprained my ankle last year. It seemed to take forever to heal, but I think this was partially due to the fact that I had to stand on it (in a boot) for hours at work. I was also so impatient that I kept trying to workout even when it was sort of hurting me. So yea, I know what it's like to get hurt and not be able to exercise like you want. Don't be dumb like I was though. Stay off it....or at least take it easy. Hopefully it's not too bad.

I have a broken toe right now. It's my very first broken bone and it's just this tiny little bone in my toe. It's not particularly painful (except every now and then) but it looked really crazy at first because it stuck out to the side.

If you can go to the doctor. An x-ray can really help make sure it gets set back in place correctly. If it heals wrong then you might not dance or run as well as you used to and you might get arthritis there later in life.

Whether you go to the doctor or not, you should use an anti-inflammatory and ice for the first two days. Ice for 10-20 minutes every 2 hours or so. And elevate it. If you can keep the swelling down then you an speed your recovery and also reduce the pain.

They said mine should take 4-6 weeks to heal. They gave me a special shoe to wear with a hard flat bottom and I was reprimanded on my follow-up visit for not wearing it all the time. Just google "broken toe" and you can read WebMD and other websites about the normal treatment.

I am not suggesting that you use this information to diagnose yourself...you should always seek the advise of a medical professional. (because in the U.S., you can sue anyone for anything they say)

Anyways, I'd bummed my toe up pretty bad last year. When I hit my toe it hurt a lot, it swelled, turned colors, etc... I could barely walk on it. A week went by, and it was still giving me problems. Plus, when I compared it to my other toe, it seemed to stick out a bit. At the time, I had good health insurance (I still have health insurance now, but a different plan, and I can't afford to see a doctor for anything.).

At the doctor, a foot specialist, the entire staff agreed that it definitely looked broken (before x-ray), until I reached down with my hand and touched the toe with my fingers. The shear fact that I was able to touch my toe, and pinch it between two fingers, caused the entire staff to relax, and they all unanimously agreed that I did not had a broken toe. Then, I had the x-ray, which confirmed my non-broken toe.

I hope this bit of info helps. Just my own personal experience.

you can tape it to the next toe if that helps, but since you are a dancer, I think you ought to definately get it checked out....you don't want to be laid up longer because it didn't heal properly.....if it is broken, I wouldn't count on running those races next month. If only sprained or dislocated, you might be able to. Your feet take all of the shock of your weight on them when running, so it's probably going to be pushing it to try to run.

Good luck, and get it checked out!

I have never had a broken toe but I just wanted to say that I hope it heals soon and it's not as serious as you fear. Stay off of it, elavate it, ice it and take it easy.

Quote:

Nothing to add that hasn't already been said, so just saying that I hope it heals up fast. I broke a toe several years ago and it took about four weeks to feel normal again.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Turns out I may have overreacted just a little

It is much improved this morning, it doesn't even hurt. I still can't bend it, but I can wiggle it! I think it will be better soon

I just walked over 4 miles on it, I think it's gonna be just fine. I don't think I'm going to be doing any tendues this weekend, but otherwise I'm feeling a little embarrassed

If it makes you feel any better, I broke my toe senior year in college dancing around a common room in lingerie to the Spice Girls with several friends (male and female, all in lingerie). I slipped and crashed my pinky toe into the big heavy industrial dorm common room furniture. Yow yow yow. Really can't do anything about it but tape it to the next toe and whine and limp.

Don't know if it made yally feel any better, but the mental image sure brightened my lousy day!
