Lose weight, finally?

Since i went on medication for my mental health 7 years ago, i put on weight. Its been a horrible road to go down, i never have eaten badly, my parents are healthy and i always likes 'good' food. I think the combination of starting uni and having alcohol a lot, with midnight drunken pizzas, hangover food...then with the meds, well it was a disaster. Plus its got continuously worse.

Now i feel im on a better path, since i began vegetarian diet (ok only 3 weeks haha) but i have turned down cake my housemate brought home, and eating out has been great because veggie stuff just seems healthier and lighter. Im enjoying looking for recipes and enjoying eating this way. Plus my water intake has increased a lot.

im not even stressing about protein! Usually i focus on it, meat meat meat...i know i dont want to eat meat ever again, but im not even worrying about my intake on a vegetarian diet. I think it may be because i know if i eat well and exercise, i will lose weight.

So next i want to slowly introduce exercise. I want to go on a short walk or bike ride each morning. Im trying to build slow and gentle, i think my problems in the past has been going full pelt ahead right at the beginning and failing and quitting.

Fingers crossed. any tips/advice/thoughts are very welcome.

Peace x

That's fantastic! How is the weather where you are for cycling? I live in a warm place and have a bike that I should use more!

Good news as this week i lost 4 pounds!!!!!! :D
put on 3lb.....HOW? god this is so frustrating :(
What's your height and weight ? I think it is important , just to make a picture if you need or not need to put/lose some weight.
I am not sure how often you are weighing yourself, but 3-4 pounds is something you can gain and lose in half a day or less. If you're really monitoring yourself if might be better to have a system which averages things out over time.
I second the suggestion of weighing in less often so you can see long term trends. Maybe every two weeks on a set day. I do Fridays because I've behaved myself all week and that's my when the numbers are in my favor!

Also, be sure to weigh yourself at the same time every day. I am always shocked by how much my weight can fluctuate even between the morning and the evening!

I've been vegetarian, vegan and omni and found that I can put on weight on any diet because my body likes to stack on weight in general. For me, counting daily calories is crucial for losing weight. I use MyFitnessPal on my phone, which I think is a very comprehensive app with a lot of foods listed.
ive been weighing myself every 2 weeks, its not budging or moving up or down a couple pounds :( its making me so sad.

Im 5ft 7 & 248lb :'( so so so so so awful i know.
Still no budge.....

Im trying so hard, maybe i need to exercise more...
If you're exercising, you could be gaining muscle. Try taking measurements and take notice to how clothes feel. Focus should be on health, not just the numbers.

I'll say it again - it's easier to lose weight as a vegan than as a lacto-ovo, especially if you don't consume a lot of vegan desserts, and only eat the fun processed products in moderation (like I've been eating a lot of beans, rice, tofu and veggies lately, so I made a date with Tofurky, but it's apparently harder for vegans to lose weight if they over-rely on the faux meats, etc).

If you are lacto-ovo, your weight may come off more gradually, or not at all if you rely too much on cheese.

Just a couple weeks after doing mostly vegan I could see it around my face. And I eat well - I eat when I'm hungry and don't do anything overly restrictive. However it probably helps that I'm not a big dessert person unless it's vegan fruit snacks or dark chocolate.

Aim to fill up on veggies, choose whole grains, and limit (eliminate?) added sweetners. And don't allow booze to make food decisions!!!
It takes a while for new changes to become habits - so go easy on yourself, give yourself plenty of time, and allow for the occasional flub-up. Aim to fill up on veggies, choose whole grains, and limit (eliminate?) added sweetners. And don't allow booze to make food decisions!!! Good luck!

Worth repeating? Hmmmmm.....
Second time noted
The human body is always in flux. I would not be so woried about 1 pound of weight gain. Sorry to be so graphic, but vegetarians get a ton more fiber than others, especially those not making sensible food decisions, and thus you have heavier poop. Water also will cause poundage. A gallon is 8 pounds (thereabouts).

You should judge your fat loss with things like caliper tests and so on. I mean, how much fatty deposits you can grab, wobble, and jiggle.
If you exercise and make good food choices you will lose weight, what really helped me was cutting out sugar almost completely. Once you change your stomach bio you´ll find that you stop craving sweets.
Bye-bye almost 15 pounds this winter) I'm so happy)
Anti-psychotic and anti depression (and anti migraine) meds make you want to eat more. You put on weight and then you find it very difficult to loose.

Everybody who is saying exercise is right. Lots of exercise. Consistent exercise.

I feel for you. It took me months in the gym to lose the wait I put on from taking an anti migraine drug and a person in my family is working hard to loose the weight put on taking Lithium.

What's wrong with using Stevia as a sweetener substitute.

Someone might have asked this but have you had your thyroid checked ?
and remember muscle weighs more than fat so don't think your getting fatter when you excercise just because the scales read heavier.
The key to losing weight, I think, is getting rid of all that sugar that you may have in your diet because sugar has a lot of empty calories in it. A lot of food products sold at mainstream grocery stores which are perceived by the average consumer as being healthy are actually full of sugar. It's best to pick up most of your groceries from the produce aisle.
