Hi all! I'm a 30 year old female living just south of Twin Cities area. I love hanging out on forums of interest to me and have been looking for a good veggie/vegan board and last week I finally found the VeggieBoards! I wanted to do a week of lurking to get a gist of the atmosphere, and then I'd introduce myself.

So here I am!

How did I start this road to veganism? Coming from the midwest, growing up on a farm, I had my challenges to overcome. I loved animals, never saw what the big deal was with meat, but my family would have been more terrified if I turned vegetarian than a smoker. In college I gave up meat, but never thought about nutrition and had a few health problems. I then ate meat occasionally, but never bought it for groceries.

After college, I became an Internet programmer, which I loved. I also was an avid Everquest gamer. As a contractor, working 80 hour weeks and traveling sometimes (or playing EQ 80 hours a week) took a toll on my health and often made me wish for a simpler life. Well I got what I wished for.

I no longer work anymore. I gave up gaming. I am still addicted to programming but I code on my own projects now. I currently run a popular gaming site that gets 100,000 hits a day with 2.2 gigs traffic per day, and its quite expensive to maintain, especially since I don't want to promote that lifestyle anymore. I plan to shut that down and start a more meaningful one. My dream is to create a website which will help people live healthier lives. So I am working towards that dream now.

With my free time, I've studied ALOT. I became interested in fitness and nutrition. A year ago I picked up one of John Robbin's books. Then I read another. I tried veganism early last summer, but got turned off by tempeh and seitan in my dishes. I never liked meat in the first place, I shouldn't have been trying to replicate it. So I strived to be vegetarian, while slowly phasing out cow-milk. I continued to read on health and nutrition, reading the works of Ornish, McDougal, Robbins, Frances Moore Lappe, and many others. Adamantly convinced that the vegan diet is optimal for health, and happy it coincides with my love for animals and our world, two weeks ago I cut out eggs and cheese, and vowed to be vegan from now on.

I feel great. I am getting all my nutrients and have lots of energy and am always happy. I'm striving to run 4-5 miles a day as well as strength training. I am continuing to learn on how to better my life and world and hope to learn with all of you.

I look forward to meeting you all on the boards!

I live in the twin cities too but I have the impression their not the same twin cities since we're the only ones that call them that. Anyway, welcome to VB! You must have liked it well enough since you stuck around and introduced yourself.
