Can I just make a simple point- you guys say a lot that is annoys you greatly when omnis ask you how you can manage or tell you that they think what you're doing is great. I can understand that annoyance becuz I have experienced it myslef. On the other hand, I think that we should stop looking for insults in perfectly nice questions and statements. I mean, if we don't explain it to their underdeveloped minds then they will never understand and therefore will never convert. As it is we are giving them reason to believe that we are a bunch of stuck up, exclusive snobs who hate everyone else. And as for "I think what you're doing is great" SMILE! it's nice to get a compliment once in a while, even if you don't agree with it. Or you could simply say, "Thank you." I admit that this may be slightly unrealistic when you're angry, but it was just a thought. Let me know what you think.

No, it's true. Ignorance is never intended to anger, yet it does, because it's hard to be patient when constantly explaining our positions to the uninformed. Now that we've enlightened ourselves in one aspect of our lives, the next is grow in patience with others. I still find this one challenging on a daily basis!

True. And some people I've spoken with really want to know more so I'll happily participate in a question and answer session with them. There are still those 1 or 2 folks that really take heart of what you are saying and try to apply it to themselves, unknowingly of course. You can always tell these people. They are the ones that are most aggresive with you. I sometimes will give them a chance to discuss issues with me as long as I feel they are continuing to respect me and not moking my beliefs. When I start to feel disrespected and that they have other motives, I politely back away. In my very limited experience, I've noticed that these people need to deal with their own issues regarding the animals and whether or not they will continue in their actions. Once they come to grips, they can usually carry on a respectful, thoughtful, genuine conversation with you without either party feeling the need to get defensive. It's all a part of the process.

Note: Veg*ns are people with feelings and reactions the same as everyone else. I feel that sometimes a veg*ns reaction that is a normal human typical reaction to a situation is unfairly classified as "look at them, those emotional animal lovers" type deal. This really bothers me. The other one that bothers me is the one that you use in your original post. This one: "As it is we are giving them reason to believe that we are a bunch of stuck up, exclusive snobs who hate everyone else." Maybe this speaks more of the people that you've been exposed to and youself than it does us. I don't really see myself as this or most here as fitting in this statement at all. Is this the vibe you've been getting from people here at VB or people you deal with in the non-pc world?

Check out the "My sweet, sweet omni friend" thread for lots of uplifting stories about omnis.

I think there's a place for both venting about "stupid omnis" and for celebrating "sweet omnis." Both are reasonable sentiments, and when it comes to venting this IS the place.

IRL, though, I've never felt genuinely insulted by an omni, and I always take their questions as opportunities to explain and inform. I'm a big fan of the gentle approach!

I'm with you, sunnyk. One day, during a conversation with my sister (Sisi), she had a fun time with me and veg*nism. It started with my love for cheese and why I have to avoid it now and went on from there. I was cool, I was calm, and felt like I sounded like every post written on these boards but put all the knowledge in my own words (thanks you all, BTW). She giggled and questioned and made all kinds of comments that sounded like its own version of "that dumb omni". The next day, though, I get this message on my machine: "Ok, Dee. I've got this block of tofu. Now, what am I supposed to do with it?" Well! knock me over with a breeze! I didn't know she was inclined, or even interested. Well, I gave her a few recipes that one could do with the type she got and I don't know which one she tried, but I heard it was pretty good so I'm happy.

Sometimes, it's frustraiting to get the same questions/comments/remarks over and over. That's why we come here to post about them. It keeps the edge off so that when that omni says "what do you do with tofu" or "how do you get your protiens?" we can answer them with a calm and sound response instead of going off and saying things that we can't take back later or making the whole of the veg*n community sound like a bunch of wackos that "lose it" at a second's notice. It seems odd, I know but this is our "safe place" and a great place to come to when no one else understands...

I agree with what's been posted here. I think we need better ways to convert the omnis, though. I think I'll start a thread about that.

I say; live life how you want to live it and let others live theirs, just make sure to educate them and make them see that your way is the right way

majake...

i'm sorry, but you are wrong...

i have so many people in my life who are just as blessed and wonderful as you or i and i love them , and they are omni. i'm the only vegan in my family and friends, and it makes no difference to love n friendship... just makes for lots of interesting conversation!

just because you didn't 'find' any goodness doesn't mean it wasn't there. maybe you looked in the wrong places. i think it is arrogant of you to assume that goodness in omnis doesn't exist. that is RIDICULOUS!

this is an impossibility, i can't be wrong, never ever am i wrong. If i say it doesnt exist than it doesn't exist. You may think it exists but that is only because you are blind to the fact that it doesn't exist, but im here to open your eyes and let you see the truth of the omnis who sole purpose in life is to kill animals and convert vegheads back to the way of the omni. Make no mistake about it, they are trying to trick you and lead you down the wrong path, but you must persevere and not stray from the path of the right and good that is veg-uh-nism.

Wow. Now you're starting to freak me out. This is certainly false. I won't say that such people don't exist, but to categorize all omnis that way... *whistles* That's way out in left field, majake.

I see it through most of the post, but it gets increasingly bizarre... And I've heard people rant like that, so... it understandably makes me nervous. But I do believe you're right, Tame. It was bound to happen eventually.

I've got an omni girlfriend, and omni family, an omni dog/cat and all my friends are omnis.

To put it simply, there is good in omnis. It's just that their eating is a bit annoying at times, and has a nastier impact on the environment etc, and bacon absolutely stinks, but hey, there are great omnis out there, who are Ok with me being vegetarian, and fully support it, and are great people to hang with. This seems to be the vast majority as well.
