I'm older than most 'newbies' - 55. I've been trying to eat 'less' meat for several years but just now making a real commitment to becoming vegetarian.

Mainly for health reasons (I'm obese and have high blood pressure and acid reflux) but I do care about animals and the environment.

My challenges are that I'm allergic to soy and hate the smell/taste/texture of eggs.

I'm blessed though to be in a good situation to make this change (I've been lurking here for a while so I know some of you really have to struggle with friends/family) - I live in a large multicultural city (veggie choices on most menus), I have a new supervisor who is a 20-year vegetarian and several other vegetarians at work, and my husband is supportive (modifying meals so I can eat vegetarian and he can still have meat, which he doesn't want to give up).

Welcome! I'm glad that you seem to be living in conditions that will make going vegetarian a little easier for you.

Welcome. I am a newbie here myself (just joined yesterday) and I just turned 50. I don't eat soy myself but I do eat fish, eggs and a TON of vegetables.
I consider myself a Pescatarian.

At this point, I don't know because I really like fish and seafood.
I would probably give up the eggs first before the fish.

Just so you know, this forum is for vegetarians/ aspiring vegetarians. Talking about eating fish (as it is not vegetarian) is against the TOS. I hope you consider giving it up.

No vegetarian eats fish. If you read the rules, talking about fish consumption is strictly forbidden on VB.

I know a guy who considers himself vegetarian yet he eats fish once a week.

With that said, I will read the TOS but I am NOT going to get into a pissing match with you over what I currently eat and what I talk about.
I am new to the vegetarian/vegan way of eating and working my way up to becoming a vegan in my own good time. I would appreciate it if you would respect that and not try to start an argument with me over anything I say. Thank you.

P.S. Sorry Mamacat. I am not trying to threadjack your thread.

I'm not trying to start a pudding match (i know it can be hard to tell tone over the internet), I'm glad that you've made the steps you have. I think its great. And I know we all have our own pace, and I respect that.

I am only trying to inform. People who consider fish vegetarian tends to be a sore point among members here. That's all.

I will find some other forum to post. My current choice of diet is not accepted here and I feel like have been attacked.
I might become vegetarian or vegan in the future but right now I simply do not know. I have come this far but it has taken me some time.

I wish you well Mamacat. I hope you succeed in your goals.

She wasn't attacking you in the least, not sure how you got that from her posts. She's just stating facts about the rules and meaning of vegetarianism. I was a Pescetarian for months before making the final switch, I think it can be a good stepping stone. She was just stating that you can't post about how you eat animals, especially if you're not planning to give it up. You'll find that most vegetarian forums have the same rules.

Eating fish is no different than eating a cow, chicken, or pig. It's odd to join a vegetarian forum and be offended that people here don't want others to discuss supporting the death of animals. It would be like joining a domestic abuse support forum and posting that you currently beat your spouse or a Christian site and say you still worship the devil. We want you to stay if you're working towards vegetarianism, we embrace members like that with open arms.

pinkswan - I'll fess up - I was on here a few years ago and got banned because at the time it simply wasn't possible for me to be totally vegetarian and I admitted that. So I have been lurking but didn't re-join until I could follow the rules.

Thanks everyone for the great welcome - day four of no meat (or poultry or fish) for me!
