I wanna watch the films/shows that are on my laptop on my tv!

anyhoo

I know to do this i should use a VGA-VGA cable . My laptop has a VGA port at the back for an additional monitor, however my TV cost £40 in asda so therefore doesnt!

it does have a SCART though, and i already have a scart adapter with the 3 channels (red yellow white, not sure the technical term) for my ps2.

Ive seen VGA-SCART cables on ebay, but unless its stupidly short (as in, would have to balance laptop on top of the tv) theyre quite expensive.

so does anyone know whether this'd work or not - i dont want to shell out for something that'll just disappoint me =\\

that probably made no sense, if it doesnt i apologise

It should work fine. We just got a scart adapter for a video game joystick thingy a few weeks ago.

Uh

my cable came

It didnt work!

that was an £8 well spent!

My laptop screen is black when starting up, so it knows somethings happening, but hitting the hotkey for "change to external monitor" does nothing, and i cant even see if im past the startup (I have a password on the BIOS so it wouldnt load windows automatically - if i plug in the vga before turning on the computer reboots anyway)

Could it be just because its a bollocksy cheap TV (anyoneee)? I read theres 2 types of SCART, my cables RGB - i dunno how to tell what my tv socket is and it really is too cheap to look up. it might just be the actual tv though, it no longer picks up any channels even with an external antennae. im attempting to find the recipt, its only 11months old!

note to self: buy known brand tv

hi pirate ferret-

vga and composite or component signals are different animals. the delivery system, i.e. scart cable, vga connectors, don't guarantee signal compatibility. i hesitated to answer this because i don't know what scart is typically capable of these days. i know the original scart devices could not process a vga signal (thinking back to the 80's tv sets here.)

so long answer short - unless your tv can process the vga signal directly, you'll need a converter vga->composite or component. some laptops have a composite out (mine does), some don't. vga converters are common (check ebay, for example), but they vary greatly in quality. the best converters i've seen cost a few hundred US $. but the less expensive units may meet your needs.

i believe there may also be usb and pcmcia options available to you.

google for vga to composite or vga to scart, see what comes up. let me know if i can be of further help.

yes, that's what i was thinking pirate. either of those converters should work, imo. i'd go with one that includes the scart connector.
