I had to delay my lunch yesterday so by the time I walked into the university refectory, I was very very hungry. Imagine my disgust when the only thing that remotely appealed to me was going to be too spicy for me (I can't handle spicy food). There was vegetarian potato bake (dairy), the spicy thing, and then mushy steamed vegetables and fried rice (white). I am sick of buying plain vegetables (I don't mind it when they are freshly cooked, but these were old) and I'm also trying to avoid white rice. Now I could have bought a vege burger (except that the last one I bought was not nice) or I could have gone unhealthy chips, wedges etc. But is it so much to ask that there be a nice healthy vegan dish? They had a yummy looking cous cous dish but they put beef in it! WHY? There was someone else vegetarian right next to me and she settled for steamed vegies and rice, but I thought "bugger this" and walked the 15 minutes into town to get some food. *sigh* Annoyed.

Ah.. I can sympathize. My university tries to always have a "vegetarian" selection, but it's usually pretty crummy. And they sort of um.. forget to supply any grains. If you go to the vegetarian line, you'll be served a big spoonful of tomato. I swear. Eggplant marinara is supposed to go over pasta, idiot. You can't just live off of eggplant swimming in sauce.

I have empathy!!

Wish you could eat where I work.

We have lots of veggie options mixed in with the regular menu.

Veggie Pasta Toss, Rice Pilaf Stir-Fry, Boca Burger, Monster Garden Salad, etc.

Our Salad bar has tons of hearty vegan things (and I've gotten the meat stuff down to just turkey......and I'm going to sneak that out sometime soon!) :)

You know - I put most of this stuff on the menu because I'm vegan - and when I did....people were like "ugh, look at her.... pushing her eating on everyone". You know what though - everyone LOVES THE FOOD!!! Omni's come in and order veggie stuff all the time, and our salad bar is the #1 selling item in our restaurant. In my dreams - maybe the good veggie food might gently nudge some omni people to give the veggie-life a try (sigh, we can always dream can't we?)

I work at a college. It's a small, conservative, private college in the southern U.S. You'd be lucky to find ONE vegetarian option in our dining hall and it would be swimming in cheese. I don't even try to eat here.

On a positive note, I travelled across the U.S. last summer and was shocked at how easy it was to find vegan food in small towns and cities across the country. East of the Mississippi was admittedly difficult, but the further west I went, vegan convenience foods were turning up in even some of thesmallest towns. Things seem to be improving.

The vegan food choices in our school are pretty limited, too (which is bad b/c I go to a boarding school and I have to eat at school as I've already paid for the food and there is no proper pantry/ kitchen in our boarding house). Like today at lunchtime, they had fish and chips, vegetable lasagna (loaded with cheese), carrots that were swimming in butter, WHITE pasta, beef bolognaise, cheese and herb rolls, rice pudding (w/ cow's milk), etc. Why can't they have healthier foods like organic veggies and whole grains?? Why can't they be more creative with food? You can always rely on jacket potato and salad, though, but that soon gets pretty boring......

Yup, theres a bit of veggie food in the canteen @ school. It's just been done up!

And the veggie food is mainly cheese-based, or doesn't appeal to me. But when they start selling budweiser and vegetarian rogan josh, then I'll be a happy customer.

Oh yeah, and linda mccartney sausage rolls - That's how to attract me.

I hate eating out period. In college I always brought my own lunch. Otherwise, I'd end up eating nothing but a little salad for lunch. I got bored of that after 3 days (not to mention that its not enough to eat!) Now fourtuently, since I have two jobs, I always have two hours for lunch so I always get to go home.

I think the other annoying thing is the veg foods are pretty much done by day... since I'm only there on Wednesdays usually it means the same boring things...

Skylark, that would be... weird...
