As of yesterday, my knee was still severely swollen. This was after anti-inflammatory medication, salt water soaks, bandaging, IcyHot sleeves, nothing was working and I was becoming more immobile everyday.

My mother still told me there was no way she was taking me in to a doctor. I went to my aunt's, who has been studying in the medical field for 10+ years, showed her the knee and my purple toes, and she called my mother and told her I had to go in or else I was going to lose my feet and need knee surgery.

So we went in last night around 9:30 p.m. They looked at my knee and my toes, discussed me, sent me to x-ray, took some blood, sent me back to my room for draining.

They actually had to attempt draining twice, and it was miserable. They take a huge syringe and push it in until it hits the bone, and then they draw the fluid from it. My doctor kept pushing my knee around, wiggling it, poking it, jabbing it with his thumb. I was crying. Hard. It was awful.

Afterward I was shaking and my teeth were chattering. My doctor told me that my x-rays showed nothing. The fluid went in for testing, and he will be calling me tomorrow to let me know the results.

He's pretty sure it's an infection. I am currently on antibiotics, pain medication and antihistamines [I had a reaction after the draining]. I go back in Monday, and they'll be draining the rest of it at that time and replacing it with steroids. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

So, it's not a sprain, nothing is torn, the muscles are fine. I have an infection that should be diagnosed tomorrow.

I am glad as well, even though the treatment is miserable. I knew if I let this crap go on I would be needing knee surgery soon.

The doctor has been very nice to us considering I have no health insurance. He is trying to keep things as cheap as possible without cutting my care down, which is helping my mother a lot.

Very good to hear there is no damage and you can get out of this with just a couple visits. That drainange really, really, really sucks, but it can really help with the pain, making it worthwhile.

They drained an entire pouch on the top left of my knee, which helped with the pressure. The rest gets drained Monday.

Here it is quarter to 7 Saturday and my doctor still hasn't called with my test results. I'm getting antsy in the ... pantsy.

My aunt thinks something's wrong with my kidneys, so I'm getting on WebMD to do a search.

Thanks for the update, HCA. I'd noticed you weren't around either and wondered how you were doing.

Keep us in the loop, ok?

Yep yep.

The entire top of my knee has managed to refill itself. Extremely painful and lots of pressure. I never got the call from the doctor today, which I have to admit really pissed me off big time since I was promised to get a call today as soon as the results came in. Nothin'.

Hopefully I get the call tomorrow and Monday isn't too miserable.

I'm very sorry to hear that you don't have insurance. And that the treatment was so horrible.

It's scary to think, but infections can kill or cause you to lose body parts. It actually almost happened to my friend. She had a minor bike accident, with just a small scrape on her shin. It got red and swollen. But it was just a small cut, right? It kept growing, and pus squirted out of it. She probably didn't take her temp, which might have been high. She finally went in to urgent care who said one more day could have killed her. Just from a small scratch that got infected.

I understand the no insurance issue. Perhaps you need to get a good reference source, or use your aunt regularly to know things that absolutely need medical treatment. In this case, if you had a fever or perhaps the color change should have been the sign that it was getting serious.

I hope you get better. Sorry to hear about the pain.

Still no call from the doctor. I guess I'll have to wait to find out when I go in tomorrow for draining.

The pouch they drained for testing was completely refilled by yesterday.

Hi Handcuffed

Did they ever figure out what was causing your knee infection? Are you feeling better yet. Worried about you.
