http://www.examiner.com/green-celebr...an-diet-slim-d

Quote:

The pop singer and reality star is pictured on the cover wearing only an Armani shirt, and she looks better than ever. It's hard to believe that it was only months ago that Simpson was being scrutinized for her perpetual weight gain (and knack for choosing very unflattering outfits). However, those days are a thing of the past.
Simpson credits her new physique to becoming vegan. After dating her fiance, Eric Johnson (a former NFL pro and current vegan), she decided to try the animal-free diet and it's a good thing she did--Jessica Simpson looks healthier, slimmer, and better than ever.

Now I hate celebrity gossip and Jessica Simpson annoys the bejeesus out of me, but this news practically had me cheering.

I somehow doubt that we're ever going to convince the shallow and appearance obsessed types to stop eating animals for ethical or environmental reasons, they don't care. But I'd like to see everyone go vegan, and if they'll do it so they can fit into a pair of daisy dukes instead then great! The positive result is the same either way.

I don't understand why someone avoids wool and leather in order to slim down.

hhhhmmmm...this is *great* news....but, my only concern is that she is only doing it 1. for vanity, 2. for her fiancee. so what happens if they break up? back to burgers?

I wouldn't be too surprised honestly. It would be really funny if she went back to meat and gained all the weight back and then was forced to go back to the vegan diet

I just figure the fact that she's doing it at all and demonstrating it's healthy and can contribute to weight loss (if you don't pig out on fries and So Delicious ice cream) is a good thing.

It's good press, and my hope is that some ditzy teeny boppers are going to hear about this and Google "vegan" and stumble on a bunch of information that will actually get them thinking.

How is this supposed to de-moron her? Vegan can't fix that.

Ugh, in a way that kind of urks me. Like if she's going to be veg*n she should do it the right way, not do it because it slims her down and because her fiance is one. I actually picture her walking around in her leather shoes, wearing fur coats, and so on-- while claiming she's vegan. Yeah, I dunno...

She'll start wearing this shirt again:

Yup, even if she's still wearing leather and using animal tested products (which she almost definitely is unless she got a brain transplant) at least she's buying way less animal products in general and promoting the benefits of a vegan diet. Positive exposure is always a good thing even if I'm not thrilled by the source.

Honestly for someone as floopy and inconsistent as Jessica Simpson (that shirt being a perfect example) I'd say this is as good as it's going to get. Even if she goes back to eating meat tomorrow all the press about her looking so great while eating a vegan diet will still exist and influence impressionable teens, so yay!

For however long it lasts (and I'm betting it's not long), she won't be eating animals. That's the positive. When she starts eating meat again, it'll all be about how difficult, unsustainable and unhealthy it is to be veg*n, and it'll just reinforce the idea that veg*nism is just a fad. That's the negative.

Yeah, I think it will be something about how she just needed a hamburger (maybe she'll say she was weak and "needed" red meat for iron), and how important it is to live and enjoy life and not deprive yourself and obsess about food (which she'll say she was doing as a "vegan" - all the label reading), etc.

That is possible, but I'm less concerned about that kind of backlash than I would have been 5 years ago. There are so many high profile celebrity vegans out there, both atheletes and actors, that even if she does go the Angelina Jolie route she'll have a much harder time finding anyone to take her seriously. Oprah rules the world man, and public opinion about veganism is changing fast.

I think just the tone of that article is an indication of how much things have changed. There were no disparaging comments about her eating rabbit food or trying something weird and quirky, her eating a plant based diet was portrayed as something both normal and positive and that alone was a shock for me.

This quote in particular:

Quote:

she decided to try the animal-free diet and it's a good thing she did--Jessica Simpson looks healthier, slimmer, and better than ever.

is astonishingly positive for a mainstream celebrity gossip rag.

I've lost some weight after switching but I have to say that becoming vegetarian for weight loss alone doesn't mean the person cares about the other factors surrounding this choice. They may be helping but not with the intention of doing so and thus they could go back anytime they feel like.

The deeply ironic thing is, the red tshirt kind of makes her look like a steak. I hope she does a wardrobe rethink and never wears that again.
