<div class="quote-block">Jamie Hubley, a gay 15-year-old from Ottawa, Canada, committed suicide on Friday.<br><br>
The 10th grade student documented his life, including his depression and the hardships of being a gay teen, in a blog, reports the Ottawa Citizen.<br><br>
The blog, called "You Can't Break... When You're Already Broken" featured posts with numerous references to and photos of self harm and cutting, pictures of guys kissing and mentions of wanting a boyfriend, and bleak, ominous messages like "Sometimes I wish the breeze would just take me with it," "The only thing worse than being hated is being ignored. At least when they hate you they treat you like you exist," and "Suicides is always an option."</div>
</div>

I'd like to invite everyone to a facebook event to remember him and to try to help stop bullying. I didn't know him personally, but i've had similar struggles and felt i had to do this. R.I.P. Jamie.<br><br><a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=297277876949721&notif_t=event_photo_change" target="_blank">http://www.facebook.com/event.php?ei...t_photo_change</a>

The link isn't working. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/sad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":("><br><br>
Truly heartbreaking. It's so sad and very eerie how his story (even his name and age) is so similar to Jamey Rodemeyer's. I wish these two had found each other before it was too late. It might've helped to let them feel less alone.

I question the idea of coming out as the only gay person in an American school.

It worked for me, weird.<br><br>
I also agree with the fact that it is truly heartbreaking. I just don't understand how even after being gay is totally acceptable now how these tragic things still happen. I think we need to get some better programs in about bullying/mental health as teachers... because obviously they aren't doing the job right now.

The article was from Canada.<br><br>
but to be honest, if you are the only gay person in the school, what good does it do to come out anyway? not like someone else is going to change just so you have a date.<br><br>
on the other hand, maybe thinking you are the only gay in the school is also the thought that the other gays in the school have, and by coming out you open the door for them to come through too.<br>
tough choice.

What good does it do to come out? You seem to think kids come out of the closet to get a date to the prom or to start a trend. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/huh.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=""> I would imagine that anyone coming out as homosexual or bisexual would be seeking the freedom and acceptance to be who they really are, just like their straight friends.

And the latter is a good thing.<br><br>
But if that benefit isn't given to you, then what incentive does one have at all?

It must be incredibly emotionally draining to pretend to be someone you're not every single day. To hide your true emotions and true feelings. Can you not see how coming out would be freedom from that?

It's not easy, but I believe it to be preferable over the consequences in scenarios like this.

You think he might have had a clue what the general thoughts on gays were before he came out?<br>
why would he assume that just because he came out, suddenly everyone would change their mind on the issue.<br><br>
Its not the way it works.

Not to mention that it may actually have helped him to get a date. Statistically speaking, if there were more than 40 or 50 students in that school, then there's no way in hell he was the only gay one.<br><br>

I'm sure he had a clue - it was documented on his blog.<br><br>
And as for "general thoughts on gays", I'll bet it was a hostile, small minority that gave him trouble.<br><br>
I'm sure that with this awful outcome, anyone else thinking about coming out will have a lot of soul-searching to do, before taking such a risk.

so he jumps in a fire and then complains because he gets burned?<br><br>
why is it expected that people will change their opinion just so they dont hurt someone elses feelings.<br><br>
Do you always change your opinion and accept as valid those ideas that you do not agree with?

I don't think hurting someone's feelings is an acceptable way of expressing any opinion.

so he comes out and says he is gay, they are all supposed to do what?<br>
evidently just ignoring him is bad too.<br>
so, you must think they should automatically accept gay when they didn't before he came out?<br>
I wonder how often he took part in the gay jokes before he came out and suddenly expected them all the alter their opinions and behavior

Yeah he was such a ****ing a-hole, I'm glad he's dead now so he won't be having those unjustified expectations about other people that offend you so.

I know this is a free world and free board and there is freedom of speech, but fatman can i please ask you to stay off this one thread, i don't want it ending up in the heap and this is not the place for a debate, just show an ounce of respect for once on here and leave it alone.

Yes, I absolutely do think that students should not be bullied or ignored because of their sexual identity.<br><br>
I would guess, that if this young man had been around people telling gay jokes (honestly, it's hard for me to believe people could still be so ignorant as to find this kind of thing amusing), that he would have felt very self-conscious and ashamed. No kid should be made to feel bad because of his/her sexuality - especially in school.

didnt say that, you did, Im sorry you feel that way.<br><br>
but honestly, you all are just as guilty of not accepting alternative thoughts as you blame others for.<br><br>
all Im getting at is this, what exactly did he expect when he came out. Im pretty sure that when he came out was not the first time gay was discussed among his friends, Im pretty sure they even called each other gay joking around.<br>
Is it expected that everyone is going to suddenly become gay accepting just because someone comes out?
