I think saying '03 could be misleading if you said it to someone who had seen you eating meat in '03 or '04. I would probably say "November '05, and a couple of years on and off leading up to that."

There is only one right answer: You've been a vegetarian since the last time you ate meat.

Otherwise you could argue that everyone is a vegetarian between meals.

Take me, for instance. I've been vegetarian since around 1992 (I don't even really know when, exactly), went vegan for about five years, went lacto-ovo about five years ago and went back to being vegan very recently when I found this place.

So I would say I have been a vegan for a couple of weeks. And I'm cool with it. I see no real advantage in padding the numbers.

Cheers!

Emergency back-up out-of-context slightly-altered answer:

Quote:

So, in your opinion, is it cool to say I'[m] vegetarian

Yes. It doesn't matter for how long. A day. A year. A lifetime. The point is that you are one now and plan to stay that way. Anything else is just a number.

Yeah, I always say I've been vegetarian for ___, because I had a six month lapse... But now I'm vegan, so it's more fun to watch people's eyes bug out and listen to their amusing lectures than try and explain the specifics of how long I've been each type.

I don't mean to offend, but does it really matter how long? Couldn't you just say, "Oh a year or so" or "I first became interested in veg*nism in 2003" or "My transition was gradual, it took a couple of years".

I think most people realize that it's not a transition that can happen overnight. Well, it can but it doesn't always and there's nothing wrong with that. People stop smoking, drinking, having destructive relationships, leaving the toilet seat up, and it seldom is an instantaneous change.

I always say "Oh about 2 years". I started learning about veg*nism when I was 12 or 13 but didn't take it seriously until a couple of years ago. I don't remember the last time I ate meat and I don't really care- I'm a vegetarian now, right?

Definitely don't say you've been vegetarian since 2003, since both you and your friends know that not to be true. You've been transitioning to vegetarian since 2003, and have been vegetarian since 2005.

Accidental slip-ups (obviously, if someone tells you something is vegetarian and while you're eating it, they tell you it was easily to flavor without meat because they used chicken boullion in the broth - that's not your fault) are ok, and you can still consider yourself vegetarian. Caving into that "juicy burger" is not on the same tier.

you could always say something like:

"i first got into it in '03, but i've fallen off the wagon a few times/its been a bit of a learning curve for me/i've had a few sticky moments... i've got it sussed now though, and been doing really great/have been very strict about it since 2005 ."

So True! The last time I ate meat was around 1990. And I can still do this trick!

nov. 2005.

i could see saying feb 2003 for one accidental slipup...

Agreed.

I don't believe that accidents are grounds for veg*n dismissal, but since you made a choice to go back to eating meat for a while I'd say that you probably shouldn't go with Feb. 2003. Either way, you're doing a great job now -- which is what really matters.

After going vegan, I stopped for about 2 months. When someone asks how long I've been vegan, I add up the total amount of time-- the 2 or 3 months before the 2 month backslide, and then the time that I have been vegan since then. It adds up to about 2 years. Vegetarianism is an easy answer, because I know the exact date of the day when I said "no more" and I didn't backslide after that (I had no major temptations to eat meat. Well, none that I gave into, at least).

I plan on always throwing a mini celebration for my veggie anniversary (Dec. 28, 2003). I tell my friends and all, but it's not like a celebration with them. Rather, I take my Christmas money and buy myself a cookbook, and make a cake or something else that I really want to bake. And that's it, I do a cher for me.

Instead of giving a date, if I were you, I would say "I've been a vegetarian for a total of ___ months." Now only count it when you have gone for a whole month, one week or anything less then a month without meat dosn't count you a vegetarian, but a whole month would count.

I decided to go veggie in October 1993 and by February 1994 I'd given up meat altogether. I always go from Feb 94 as the date I've been vegetarian by.

Sadly I can't say that Feb '94 was the last time I ate meat because of one time I was given a 'vegetarian' dish in a restaurant that had pork in it and I'd had a couple of mouth-fulls before I realised.

Though accidentally swallowing meat when you didn't know you were eating it is different from consciously deciding to eat meat for days or weeks at a time. If youre being completely honest with yourself you'd admit you've been veggie from 2005.
