Is it a good idea to start a new compost can in the middle of winter? I have a garbage can that I plan on using and drilling holes into for a compost. But if I start it like in the next few days is that a good idea or does it matter? I live in South Carolina and temps right now are around 35-40 degrees.

Sure, start it but it might not get to work properly until the warmer weather. My compost bin was cooking away nicely last year but since the weather turned cold it's not doing much except sitting there.
Yeah that was my thoughts on it that is why I asked about it. But I might get everything cleaned up, I have lots of leaves to rake and I cannot work out in the heat because of some physical problems. So I probably will get the hard work out of the way while its still cool.
