Hi, my name is Melani. I'm new here and there's something that bothers me for quite a while now.

I know eating animals is wrong because they're alive and have feelings, but scientists have discovered that plants have feelings too:

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive...roven_pla.aspx

http://scienceray.com/biology/botany...have-feelings/

I'm so confused right now.

Eating animals is bad because we have to kill them in order to eat them, but if plants have feelings too, wouldn't that be equally bad? Are plants less worth than animals because we can't interact with them the in same way?

Does that mean no matter what we do, we'll always have to kill in order to live? Why would god do something like that?! I couldn't eat in two days because of that, what shall I do?!

Greetings from Germany

Hi, my name is Alfonso.

1. Plants don't have "feelings", they don't even have sentience.

2. I don't object to meat-eating because it destroys life, I object to it because it destroys sentient life.

Are you suggesting that we not eat anything or that we should eat animals?

I strongly doubt that plants could have anywhere near the reaction to impending death as animals. They simply are not capable. Many plants grow stronger and bigger with periodic pruning, which is certainly not the case with animals.

But the scientists say that plants do have a sentience:

Quote:

Researchers from Michigan State University have discovered that plants have a rudimentary nerve structure, which allows them to feel pain. According to the peer-reviewed journal Plant Physiology, plants are capable of identifying danger, signaling that danger to other plants and marshaling defenses against perceived threats. According to botanist Bill Williams of the Helvetica Institute, "plants not only seem to be aware and to feel pain, they can even communicate."

Does that mean it's okay for you to kill sensitive forms of life because they can't express their pain?

I'm really concerned about this. There's so much suffering in the world, and I can't stand the thought that I could be a source of it.

You can always find individual scientists supporting whatever, including parapsychology. That's why we have this thing called a scientific community that we trust over the opinions of a couple of guys who ate the wrong mushrooms when gathering their scientific results.

Quote:
Nope. And also, you have not at all succeeded in establishing that plants are sensitive forms of life (in the sense of having experiences) or that they feel pain.

Quote:

Yeah right. Obvious you-know-what is an obvious you-know-what.

If you are truly worried about the feelings of plants, just eat fruit.

I (well, okay, people who are smarter than I) can make a computer to detect pain. They can make a computer run away from it, too. That doesn't mean the computer is actually experiencing the pain.

Plants do not have central nervous systems. They have, as the article points out, "a rudimentary nerve structure."

An organism responding to a stimulus does not mean that organism is actually experiencing anything.

Nastic movement in response to a directional stimulus is not the same as sentience.

ETA: Agree with Alfonso about s/he-who-must-not-be-named.WEE!

You could always be a level 5 vegan. Theres also breathatarianism to consider.

Plants exist in 11 dimensions. There bodies transcend 3 dimensional reality. Therefore when you eat them you are not eating the whole plant, but more like a dimensionally and temporally locked fingernail.

For some reason, it's making me happy that someone with the user title "I <3 Squirrels" is responding to someone with the user name "I-<3-Edward"

Squirrels ftw.

I type with my eyes shut. I don't even know who I'm responding to right now, for that reason. But I suspect it's otomik.

I would add to that that while human fingernails aren't exactly nutritious, this does not preclude the nutritiousness of plant fingernails.

Because we eat plants.

No, wait, hear me out.

Eating plants = eating living, breathing, sentient creatures.

Veggieboards = a place for people who do NOT eat living, breathing, sentient creatures.

Therefore, this place is only for vegetarians. We are apparently not vegetarians. We don't exist, and therefore cannot be looking at this thread.

(See those equals signs? That means this is MATH. You can't argue with math. WINNING!)
