I'm not, but my mother is an alcoholic. I drink on occasion, but I am so scared to turn into her. I'm scared for my daughter as alcoholism can be hereditary.

10 years is amazing, I only wish everyone could be that strong.
Well done.

I do enjoy a drink a bit too much. But I figure I'm still young and when I have more responsibilities I will calm down. I recently had a liver function test but luckily the results all came back fine.
interesting. GMC, My husband and I are trying for our first baby, and this is one of my fears about genetics. My dad's whole irish family were drunks, but my dad never drank. skipped a generation and i got it. it's a crapshoot really. it's a valid fear, and something to be careful about. I am grateful I'm an alcoholic now because I've gone through so much that has made life better, but you wouldn't wish that on your child. I'm sorry you had an alcoholic mother. that must have been rough.

young people drink a lot usually. It's hard to know if and when you have a problem or not.

I think the tendency towards addiction is genetic, but whether someone chooses to succumb to it is up to them.
In response to the original question, yes. Currently 3 months sober and clean - this time for sure! - in "the Program". Do you do meetings, Sally Boy, or are you going it alone?
I've never been an alcoholic. I seem to have an addictable personality, and I get really obsessive about new hobbies and stuff like that, but I've never been addicted to anything that's generally considered harmful. Right now, I'm addicted to the game of Chess (again).

Sally Boy, you might get more responses if you have this thread moved to the General Health Discussion forum in the link above- we discuss issues such as addictions there. But it's up to you.

Anyhow... I don't like the taste of alcohol that much and can't remember ever having more than one drink on any day. I can tolerate beer or wine, but anything strong like Southern Comfort or Irish Mist burns my lips and tongue. My lifetime consumption is probably about, oh, 50 drinks. It's entirely possible I have addictive tendencies; the only way I could find out for sure would be to indulge regularly, but I don't want to chance it.
Congratulations on your sobriety. That takes a lot of strength.

I gather my biological father was an alcoholic. (OTOH, that might just have been one of my mother's stories.) Anyway, it has made me careful about anything addictive.
Haven't touched any for over a month. It went to hell when I promised my wife I'd cut it way down, then the little bit I was drinking hardly gave me a buzz, so it was more bothersome than fun. I kind of miss it. Being drunk sure made internet forums look more interesting to read.

What's really weird is that even though I'm sober, I keep thinking there's a link to a Hoboforum at the top of the page. Guess I did permanent damage.
