Hi everyone. I have a 6 month old baby and have chosen not to give him the fortified rice cereal, instead opting to make my own brown rice up for bub. I've been giving him heaps of organic fruit and vegies aswel as the organic oats & biodynamic brown rice. But I'm concerned about him getting enough iron. What have others done to make sure their babies have had enough. I'd even consider a suppliment if anyone can recommend one? Thanks

I wouldn't worry too much if i were you. our daughter has been vegan since day one and the only supplement we used were Carlson's Ddrops: http://www.carlsonlabs.com/p-162-bab...ps-400-iu.aspx

Purred spinach was one of our baby's first foods. Lots of iron there.
And well, we did fortified rice cereal. And formula (which has iron) since breastmilk wasn't an option for us.
Around 9 months, he was eating mashed beans, which have iron too.
Now at 15 months he's drinking iron fortified soy milk, eating fortified cereals, and eating lots and lots of other foods.

I'm pretty sure that if you're vegan and breastfeeding without formula supplementation, the official mainstream advice from nutrition experts is to give your baby iron supplements. I'm not certain that I agree with that, but it's a good idea to check with a doctor and/or dietitian.

Elaine's post got me thinking.

Our kids were eating solids at 6 months. So, you could give them her listed foods as well as starting on fortified milks. Our kids drink soy, rice and coconut milks as well as almond at times.

Thanks for your replies.
Elaine I've purred some silverbeet the other day to put in the freezer but haven't been giving that to him every day maybe I should start to! Did you find that the mashed beans at 9 months upset your bubs bowels?

unovegan I'm breastfeeding so I know there is iron in my breastmilk which can only be absorbed by bub whereas if I start giving him fortified iron products the iron in that can be absorbed by anything in the body that likes iron and it decreases the amount of good iron bub absorbs from my breastmilk. I'm not sure all of that made sense lol

I just want to do the right thing (as we all do) and I want to know he's getting enough iron. Maybe I should just give him fortified foods Someone has suggested I give him Floradix does anyone use that?
