I've been wondering about this lately because a friend of mine has recently gotten himself involved with someone who lives quite a ways away and has only ever met her on the internet.

I have the tendancy to avoid romantic relationships over the internet, but I wonder how often they actually do or don't work.

There's something to be said for saying "Hey, I like you. If we're ever in the same place at the same time, we can have coffee and see where things go." But beginning an exclusive involvement before you ever meet the person seems like something I wouldn't want to do.

I don't think it's impossible for them to work (any more than any other relationship), but it seems like that in order for them to last they have to turn into real-life, close range relationships at a certain point.

Any thoughts?

It can work, if the individuals involved are honest, mature, and committed.

I'm involved in one right now

I agree that at some point they have to turn into real life ones though. People need physical contact

but if it's true love, it's worth moving especially when you're young and not settled anyway

I know of one relationship that ended a week after they met in RL, one that ended the day they met in RL, one where the man flew over to Canada, spent a fortnight in bed then ended it and one couple that got married and lived happily ever after (english woman, american man- he moved to the UK and they live a couple of miles away from me)

I'm a romantic, better to have loved and lost than never to have tried to find your true love(s)

I believe that they are possible. I believe that it's better to be friends first and then if something develops, go from there ... but that's just my opinion.

I think they can go quite well. Mine is.

It's really no different than the old style of connecting through each other's letters. It's been done for many years, only now it's much faster and people can get to know each other better.

Internet relationships can definitely work

To be honest, I don't really see how it's *that* much different from meeting someone elsewhere, apart from the fact that you get to know the person's personality before anything else - which is a good thing.

Yes, I believe in it.

Most of the time one will be judged and rejected on basis of the clothes you where at that moment, or the way you look, or temporarily behave.

On the net you dont see the people (like me), so you just have to judge me on what I post.

If some one is sincere/honest on a board, I think you can get to know someone really good.

Ive shared things with people here that I would not share IRL that soon.

And people are very open here too.

I think that on the net youll sooner see what people think or how they are.

Then at some point you would have to meet the other.
