Someone told me recently she's a vegetarian but she's "not that far gone" that she wouldn't eat a soup made with meat broth.

It wasn't the soup that bothered me...whatever, people all have imaginary lines in the sand...but it was the "I'm not that far gone" that bugged me.

I probably would have laughed at her. That's just such a ridiculous thing to say. So, to be "far gone" is vegetarian? Isn't that kind of like a nudist saying, "I'm not that far gone. I wear pants."

I wonder what she thinks of vegans.

HOHO!! HEHE!! HAHA!! To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds and baskets weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes and they're coming to take me away!! HAHA!!

...but seriously. Telling my friends about being a veg*n was stressful for me. I know that may be confusing to some of you but I knew it would be made into some giant spectacle. (Someday I'll share my culinary background with you all) After I told my best friend in the whole world he said something that really pissed me off, then I said something that pissed him off. He said, "Whoa! You can't just go and swear all meat off. Don't be crazy!" I said, "You're the crazy one if you keep eating meat three meals a day without giving a sh*t where is comes from or what it's doing to your body." I was mad at him for judging me and then he was mad at me for judging him.

I just don't think people think with their brains. Most people still think veg*nism is some extremist movement.

I really don't care what people chose for themselves as long as they don't pretend to be veg*n but honestly people like the OP's friend give me the irits.

It is partially because of them that I have to explain why the person who would have regular jelly/jello was not a vegetarian along with the person who eats fish when dining out or sneaks a McNugget from someone elses plate occassionally.

*Sigh* It is tiring to rectify the misconception left by wanna-be-veg*ns.

This is one of those things that you can let drive you crazy or just laugh about. I opt to laugh it off and/or keep a few clever comebacks ready for these off-the-wall sort of comments. I'm surrounded by a whole family of people who think my vegetarianism is some mental issue and they worry that I'm "too far gone to recover from this insanity."

Maybe that person (who made the comment about not being that far gone) had read this board and seen topics such as people debating whether or not you should swat a mosquito or not. You know, it's stuff like that that makes omnivores (and some here) think that some of this stuff can be taken a tad too far.

Yeah, same...If I got that "far gone" comment, I'd probably just have smiled and said, "I am that far gone."
