Following on from a previous thread I posted about applying for (and finally (after four months) was offered) a job in Munich, Bavaria, Germany....

This week all the paperwork and the offer finally came through. After thinking everything through, I've accepted, and will be handing my notice (resignation) into my current work (I've already told them verbally) on Monday.

This means I have one month to pack up everything and decide what I need to take with me. 10th of March will be my start date. Its a huge move (and one I'm sure in the future I'll look back on as one of the best I've ever made), but for the next month its very daunting.

i'm sure it'll be a great experience either way. even if you end up hating the job and quitting, in the future you'll be able to look back on your brief career in Germany and i'm sure you'll have lots of great memories from it. if that's the worst that could happen then the best that could happen must be great
does that make sense? i shouldn't post in serious topics tonight.

anyway i hope you'll keep in touch with us when you get there, and try not to get too stressed about the moving, once things get settled i'm sure you'll enjoy it!

I love it in germany - wish i could move there! Although I don't care all that much for Munich (though i suppose i can't judge the city that well considering i was sick the time i visited there), but it isn't all that far from Garmisch-Partenkirchen which is an absolutely gorgeous little town

So Jon, how'd it feel to hand in your resignation today???

Have you managed to get off of that cloud yet or what???

No?? It may take some time to reach the ground again. In the meantime, really take your time and savor this moment!!

I am so damn happy for you

I'm also looking forward to hearing about the move, your new place, what the people are like, new friends, all that stuff. Let's all live vicariously through Jon, aka Man of the World

Thanks for the kind words.

Its been a bit of a roller coaster, going from elation to panic at how much there is to do before going. Occasionally I stop and think what it will be like when I get there and that reassures me that Im doing the right thing. 10th March I start, thats only three weeks time! So much packing and sorting to do.

The reaction at work has been interesting. One of my department reacted to the news that I was going with the comment Really, thats no surprise, and has no interest in finding out anything else. I wasnt going to miss him anyway. Id leaked the job offer to my boss; a week before handing in my notice, but it still felt difficult handing in the letter. Theyve been a good company to work for, provided training, and some great opportunities, and Ive achieved a lot while Ive been there, plus I know for a fact that itll leave them in a bad position when I do go, with no support for key servers and business applications.

Other peoples reactions have been interesting; from the double-take Youre going where?, the less supportive why are you going there?, to those who see it for the geographical experience, or those that relive a missed opportunity they had and wished theyd taken. One person lived there for four years twenty years ago, and one person grew up there. With a couple of exceptions once Ive told people who Ill be working for and where the conversation stays firmly with the where. To be honest if it was just the where, I wouldnt be going. Career wise, this is a great (computer) job, diverse skills (Solaris, HP-UX, NT, 2000, Terminal Services, Citrix, SAN, programming and application support), the promise of whatever training I need (regardless of whether that course is in Germany, UK or the US), new language skills, international experience, etc.

Im hoping to finally start a website, and Ill try to fill it with pictures of Munich and beyond.

Must get back to packing.
