And I'd like some ideas for a name. It will be a male, since that is what's best for our area, where all the dogs run loose.

I'm not sure if it will be tan and black, or silver and black, but I'd like some creative names.

I don't want a name with an "e" sound on the end, simply because if someone tried to catch him, calling out "Baby," or "Sweety," may very well get him.

The name still needs to be some-what normal, so no "Xander," or "Plankton".

Thank you for your help,

I don't know. How "normal", or not, would you consider "Captain Fantastic" to be?

And yes, all of the dogs where I live run loose. There is only one that doesn't, and it's a Pitt Bull named Junebee.

Huh? Why do all the dogs run loose? And why is a male best? Where are you getting this dog from? Probably when you adopt it from a shelter it will already have a name.

Yes, I may wait until I meet the dog, but since it usually takes me a few months to come up with a name, I'd at least like to have a few in mind.

Um. . .the dogs all run loose because there is no leash law where I live. And a male is best because, seeing as all the dogs run free, and we don't have enough room for a litter of puppies, and we don't want all the other male dogs coming into our yard, and we wouldn't want to keep her locked up, I can't get a female.

I'm not posotive where I'm getting the puppy from yet, there are A LOT of options. I keep an eye out on the local shelter for a German Shepherd puppy, but so far there haven't been any.

My turn: Why is everyone so shocked that the dogs run loose?

Because it's extremely irresponsible.

And just because everyone else lets their dogs run loose, doesn't mean that you have to or should. You should work on getting a leash law for your county, not helping the practice continue.

A lot of bad things can happen to dogs who are allowed to roam loose.

Quote:

Have you heard of spaying and neutering? You should get your dog fixed whether it's male or female as soon as it's 8 weeks old. I can't believe people are letting their dogs run loose unaltered. That's just asking for trouble.

Quote:

Yes, there are a lot of options, but most of them are not good options. You don't want to get a dog from a pet store or a breeder because irresponsible breeding causes thousands of dogs to be killed every day. Keep checking the shelters until you find the right dog for you. You can also look into German Shepherd rescue groups if you've done the research on Shepherds and believe they are the right dog for your lifestyle. Shepherds a high maintenance breed, so make sure you know what you're getting into before you decide for sure that's what you want!

No kidding! And if people DO actually let all these unaltered dogs run loose, my guess is there shouldn't be any problem at all finding one at a shelter or from a rescue. There should be plenty... and many being euthanized.

If you spayed your dog you wouldnt have to worry about a litter. All the dogs run loose? wow that is..wow..very irresponsible. How many get stolen and hit by cars? In fights with other dogs?

I just read your profile and saw you already have a dog named Damon. So, duh, why not name your new dog Matt.

That seems too young. They should still be with their mothers at that age.

Yeah, they should be with their mother until 10 weeks if possible. They need to weigh at least 2 pounds and be 8 weeks old before they get spayed or neutered. But I wouldn't wait any longer than 6 months because you want it done before their first heat.

No sure about your area, free roaming dogs are fine in some areas. Since you didn't go into detail, I'll assume you live in one of those areas.

A free roaming female dog will be just as a good as a free roaming male dog. There's no reason there to require a male. Get whatever suits you, it's just not a good reason to not consider a female dog.

If your dog is going to be unaltered hir should be confined no matter which gender. If you have a free roaming male dog who is not altered, he'll get into more trouble wandering long distances to find female dogs in heat.

More chances to get lost, get into traps ( if you have them), get hit by cars etc etc.

Plus if you can't take a litter of puppies, why are you off the hook if your male dog makes someone else's female dog pregnant?. I think if your unaltered male dog makes a female dog pregnant, you are equally responsible for the puppies, unfortunatly I don't think the law alows for canine paternity child support.

I lived in a country with no leash laws. Most animals lived short painful lives. Intact males will fight with each other over anything and get many injuries trying to get females. You will have a hurt dog and huge vet bills if you are lucky, a dead dog if you are not. Neutering will not solve all problems, but it will make them less of a problem. Also, there are STD's for dogs, Brucelosis (which he could pass to you just by taking care of him) and transmissable venereal tumor (a cancer!!!) are the two worst. Are you intending to do vaccinations and heartworm preventative too?

Intact males can and do fight very viciously over the right to mate. This is hormonal and has no bearing on how well you train your dog.

If you think neutering is too expensive, consider the medical bills you'll have if your dog is severely bitten or contracts a disease from other free-roaming animals. You should not get a dog if you are unable to maintain it properly; and spaying/neutering is a necessity.

Mmm irresponsible pet ownership.

Having a dog that CREATES a litter of puppies is just as problematic as having a dog that GIVES BIRTH to the litter. You're still creating unwanted animals. The thought of owning an animal and letting it run free and not having it fixed is absolutely appauling.
