I'm almost always tired too, but it's probably my medications, one of which I take to keep me from almost always feeling tired - it's an antidepressant, and one of my depressive symptoms is feeling extremely tired most of the time. Stupid, huh?

How long have you been tired?

... too much sleep can make you sleepy too.

you need to be stimulated in the day as well. i mean, even if you sleep enough, if the day is boring and there's nothing that interests you - you'll still feel tired/fatigue.

are you possibly depressed? that might be it.

yeah- what do you eat?

I'm looking forward to reading these replies. I've been feeling exhausted for at least four years now, and I've had dark circles all that long. Recently someone told me it looked as though I'd been punched in both eyes.

I've found that magnesium tablets help me fall asleep but it may just be the routine of taking them and not the actual pills in and of themselves.

Actually my mom swears that magnesium helps you fall asleep, but it is better if you take it with calcium also. They make Cal/Mag vitamins together.

My mom told me magnesium was one of the main ingredients in many herbal sleeping pills. I haven't seen/heard of cal/mag vitamins but I'll look for them the next time we go shopping.

I have dark circles too, but that has less to do with my diet and more to do with my naturally fair complexion, and well, just getting older.

This is my story...

I have been a vegetarian since I was 12 years old (that was 35 years ago). 17 years ago I noticed I was quite tired, but thought I have two toddlers, work nights that is natural... Well those two toodlers grew and Mom had more time to sleep and eat right and instead of getting better I got worse. I checked out my B12 and sure enough I was defecient. Took B12 for a while was checked again and all was well with my B12 and I felt a WHOLE lot better but not as good as I could. A few years later I started to become terrible sleepy no matter how much I slept or excersiced. My eyes would literaly droop in the middle of my work day. Miraculasly that feeling went away after taking 50 mg zinc daily for about two months. This was about 2 years ago and the droopy eye has not come back since. The one thing I was left with was difficulty getting up in the morning. I also felt somewhat mentally foggy. I wasn't sure if it simply was a sympton of middle age? I am not THAT old or so I would like to hope. Recently I took my son who is also a vegetarian to a natharopathic doctor and she casually suggested to take 500 mg of carnitine and 1000 mg of taurine each morning. I have been doing so for about a month and a half and do not remember myself feeling as good and as alert as I am feeling these days.

Is there any one else out there that has any stories to tell about nutirients that have made a difference?

Just as a side note now that I feel better I know how bad I felt for SO MANY years. I never emphisised it very much when I went for my yearly physical because I am quite sure my MD would insist I take anti depressants, yes at times it was that bad.

if you already get enough sleep- you just feel tired during the day anyway - why w ould you want to take things that make you go to sleep.

according to your first post, that's not your problem.

Check your thyroid-you could have hypothyroidism.

I would definitly look into this as you shouldn't be tired all the time.

1.\tI do not take anything to go to sleep. Never did and never will.

2.\tI go each year to my MD and have a complete physical and everything checks out okay including my thyroid function.

The point I am raising here is that after being a vegetarian for 35 year there are most likely nutrients that by body was lacking. I was tired for the last 15 20 years but always made excuses for my self, such as hard work, small children later I started saying things to myself like I am just plain lazy. But now I know all this was not true. I was REALLY PHYSICALLY TIRED. I have asked the Naturopathic Dr and my MD about checking all nutrients and it can not be done. They typically check only a few and only if they think there might be a specific problem.

Taurine is a sulfur containing amino acid

Carnitine is sometimes called an amino acid, but it is not. It is similar in structure to B vitamins, especially choline

I'm another one who is tired all the time. My boyfriend tells me I need to be more active. I do believe that if I exercised more, I would have more energy. But, I'm too tired to exercise and have no motivation. It's an endless cycle.

Based on my experience with 100-160 people everyday, I would take a very good guess that you are not eating enough.

Our bodies need energy ie: FOOD to function. If are not getting enough energy, you will feel tired all the time.

For bow, I would highly suggest eating more foods like whole grains, nut and peanut butter. PB is a good source of fat & protein that will give you some good energy. Lots of fruit also.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR DIET CONSISTS OF AT LEAST 50% CARBS. If you by chance are not getting enough carbs, you FOR SURE are going to be tired and fatigued.

Pick a 'good' food day that you had recently and write it down and send to me. I will be happy to look at it for you.

GO EAT & GOOD LUCK!

I see you have only been a vegetarian for a year, so I would second things that have already been said here. Take a close look at your eating habits are you really having a variety of foods, enough fruits and veggies in particular green veggies? Are you getting enough protein and good source of protein? A good measure is about 1 protein gram for each pound you weigh. Are you getting enough sleep? Do you have high levels of stress? Are you depressed? I would also have a physical done to rule out any other issues.

I eat enough and I get B12. But I am pretty depressed that may contribute. I'm going to take your advice and get a gym pass this week and see how that works.
