If everyone went Veg

I'm a proud vegetarian.. but lately i've been questioning somethings. Like what would happen if everyone went veg... there would be this huge excess of animals and where would the balance be. Like in India the people don't eat cows, and the cows just end up wandering around the streets, eating garbage, miserable and skinny. Is this what we want? How would that even work?

Just curious for other thoughts, I feel guilty promoting my veg beliefs when I myself are unsure about them..

if i have a large enough outdoor space when i'm older, i would keep both hens and roosters as compainons, as well as pigs (both male and female).
I've got lots of room in my backyard for surplus cattle. They could all live back there. Saves me having to mow it.

No you come on now.

If an animal is getting an adequate diet what the heck is the problem? See one of them there other veg pet related threads for more info.

How "natural" are domesticated animals anyway? Humans have bred them to be so different from their orriginal species, who can say what can be "natural" for these pets?

Do these two animals appear to be acting "natural"?

Forcing wild animals to be vegitarian is out of the question, but I see nothing wrong with feeding domesticated animals meatless food.
Jeezy, what's the carrying capacity of your backyard?

Or would you be buying hay also?

I have 20 acres, not enough to keep even one cow.

I think she was being sarcastic.
Sorry meatless. I misunderstood. Some people really believe that and i just assumed you were one of them. Forgive me for ranting.

Thirteen centons.
hm well I would say that is unnatural, but I really need to think more into it. I'm not sure I would ever force my dog/cat to go veg personally, but if other people want to that's their choice.
For the people who would not want their omnivorious and carnivorious animals to go veg:

Would you support giving them lab grown meat or would you suggest a small meat industry keep going to feed these animals?.
Alright, am I safe to assume most of you do not live on farms?

I've lived on farms all my 14 years until last year, when I had to move to town

Not all cows can be bred for milk. Not all sheep are bred for wool. Not all chickens are bred for eggs. If people were not eating cows such as Charolais, Hereford, Angus, etc., they would no longer be bred so they would die out. Dairy cows such as Holsteins, Jerseys, etc. might still live.

My friend and her father are beef farmers, and are vegetarians. They like to raise cows, but don't like how they end up. That really doesn't have anything to do with the topic though.

If everyone went veggie, no more meat would be needed, no more cows, pigs, chickens, etc. would be bred, the older ones would die off, and that would be the end of our meat animals. That's what would happen.

I would suggest not breeding them to create this problem in the first place, especially since the non-existent potential "pets" aren't harmed by us not breeding them into existence.

But those animals are all extremely unnatural anyway. Say we organised a habitat for them and let them go in it, maybe with some predators, they'd all die. The cows would get mastitis (udder infections) because their udders are now too big for single calves. All the animals would be too slow to outrun the predators etc. I'm not sure (as much as I love them) that domestic farm animal breeds should exist.

Of course in saying that, I'm planning to have a small amount of land within the next 5-10 years on which to run pet cows, maybe people would keep them as pets or show animals or something.

Oh, and I lived on a farm for my first 20 years.
My three rescued dogs are veggie and I dont force them to be veggie, they love the stuff. If they didnt I wouldnt give it to them. When I visit an elderly aunt she will often offer them cooked chicken, they eat it. I am fine with that as it was not my money that baught it.

Dogs are like humans, omnivores. In other words a varied diet.

As for so called surplus animals if everyone went veggie, nature would take over as with wild animals and it would be natural selection. There wouldnt be surplus animals.
